The Black caps have a number of quality batters at their disposal makes this a slightly risky bet. Opener Will Young is one of those high-quality batters. The right-hander hit 383 runs in his seven ODIs preceding the start of this ODI series against Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s top-order batter is an accomplished player in ODI cricket. He was named player-of-the-series against New Zealand in the previous ODI series too for his 217 runs in three matches. He should be a safe bet.
The New Zealanders will be high on confidence after earning themselves a victory in the T20I series. The focus now shifts to the longer white-ball format where these teams should be evenly matched. You can expect similar lineups for both formats and more close contests throughout this ODI series.
The previous ODI series between New Zealand and Sri Lanka went the way of the visitors. They won that series by a margin of two wins to zero. However, the previous ODI series between them was won by New Zealand.
This will be the second ODI of the series between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Seddon Park, Hamilton on Wednesday, 8 September 2024. In India, there are numerous avenues to follow the game. You can watch it on the Sony Sports Ten 5 channel for TV broadcast and SonyLiv and FanCode apps for live-streaming.
Will Young and Rachin Ravindra form a solid opening batting pair. Both are equally capable of being aggressive against the new ball or building an innings to set a platform for the rest of the batting order. They made a 93-run opening stand in the previous match.
Young went on to make an unbeaten 90 runs with Ravindra’s 45 runs as support. Mark Chapman and Daryl Mitchell bring power and consistency to the middle order, with both able to play to the tempo of the 50-over format.
Glenn Phillips is one of the elite game-changers in the modern game for his outlandish batting, athletic fielding and more than handy off-spin. South African-born Phillips has four ODI half-centuries.
Wicketkeeper Mitchell Hay offers stability behind the stumps and valuable runs in the lower order.
Captain Mitchell Santner is the key figure with his all-round ability and leadership qualities. He will need to combine his tactical nous with his ability to control the game with bat or ball. Santner has almost 1400 ODI runs to go with over 100 ODI wickets.
The bowling attack is spearheaded by the ever-reliable Matt Henry. Henry is one of the most potent seam bowlers in the world with conditions like these. He will have support from Jacob Duffy and Will O'Rourke with their precision and pace.
All-rounder Nathan Smith adds depth with both bat and ball. Henry was basically unplayable in Wellington with a bowling spell of four wickets for only 19 runs in his ten overs. Duffy and Smith helped him with two wickets each.
Opening the innings are Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando with power and flair to give the Sri Lankans something to work with in the first powerplay. Fernando hit an impressive half-century in the first ODI. At number three, is wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis. The ever reliable and consistent Mendis will need to play the role of the cornerstone in the Sri Lankan batting lineup.
The middle order is led by skipper Charith Asalanka. His leadership and attacking threat will put the pressure back on the bowlers. The destructive left-hander has three centuries and 14 half-centuries in ODIs. Kamindu Mendis and Janith Liyanage offer further batting depth. Him and Wanindu Hasaranga added valuable scores in the 30s in the previous ODI.
Chamindu Wickramasinghe strengthens the lower middle-order with his aggressive stroke play. The star of the bowling attack is undoubtedly Wanindu Hasaranga. The world-class leg-spinner will need to think outside of the box to effective on this pitch though.
Supporting him are pacers Lahiru Kumara and Asitha Fernando. Kumara will be troublesome because of his pace. The right-arm pacer has 42 ODI wickets. Fernando will be dangerous with a swinging new ball. He has three List A five-wicket hauls. Young seamer Eshan Malinga adds fresh energy to the squad.
New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl first in the opening ODI. That toss brought them a resounding victory by nine wickets. Both teams may prefer bowling first.
Bowling conditions were at their best in the first innings. The seamers on both sides should be capable of exploiting bowling conditions which are heavily in favour of seam movement off the pitch. The batters may need to play with caution for the first hour to give themselves the best chance of cashing in when batting conditions get easier. Sri Lanka could only muster 178 all out which was chased down easily by the home side inside the 27th over for only the loss of one wicket.
There is only a ten percent chance of rain on matchday. You can expect a bit of cloud cover from above. Temperatures will be warm and fairly humid in Hamilton.
The hosts ran out as convincing victors when they met the Sri Lankans in Wellington. With complete knowledge of how to play in New Zealand, the Black Caps will be firm favourites again to take the next ODI. Sri Lanka are a quality side and will be good enough to bounce back. The visitors’ batting will need heavy improvement to challenge the New Zealanders.
