Matthew Henry has an excellent record at the Basin Reserve. He has taken four wickets in each of his last two matches here and at least 2 wickets in 7 of his 10 matches against Sri Lanka.
The seamers can expect some help from the surface. Also, the overcast conditions will help the quicker bowlers get some movement through the air. As 4 of the last 6 games played here have seen at least 16 wickets fall, we expect that trend to continue.
Sri Lanka will begin its final leg of the tour to New Zealand as it takes them on for the 3-match ODI series starting Sunday. The first match will be played at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.
The two teams have played 105 matches against each other. New Zealand has won 52, while Sri Lanka has won 43. 8 matches ended without a result, while 1 was a tie.
This match can be watched live on the Sony Liv App and Sony Sports Network.
New Zealand played excellent cricket in the T20 series that preceded the 50-over matches and claimed a much-deserved 2-1 win. As the team prepares for its Champions Trophy campaign, New Zealand will hope to claim an early advantage here.
The hosts have retained most of the players who contributed to the T20 series. Rachin Ravindra was in good form at the top of the order a half-century in the last match and could again find himself facing the new ball. He will likely be joined by Tom Latham.
The middle order will consist of Dary Mitchell, Mark Chapman, and Will Young, while all-rounders Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell will add depth to the batting.
The seam attack looks pretty strong as well. Jacob Duffy was the leading wicket-taker of the T20 series and will lead the pace attack here. He will be supported by Matthew Henry and William O’Rourke.
While Sri Lanka lost the T20 series, they did score a consolation victory in the last match, which will give the team some confidence. Sri Lanka has enjoyed a good run in the ODI format, winning back-to-back bilateral series’ against the West Indies and New Zealand.
Sri Lanka has retained most of its key players from that campaign, with a few exceptions. Sadeera Samarawickrama, going through a lean patch, has been dropped and will be replaced by Nuwanidu Fernando. Wanindu Hasaranga also made a comeback by replacing Dushan Hemantha.
Kusal Mendis will likely retain his opening slot and could be joined by either Avishka Fernando or Nishan Madushka. Janith Liyanage could be picked for this match thanks to his all-round capabilities. Dunith Wellalage is another all-rounder who will play a key role with the bat during the death overs.
Avishka Fernando headlines the pace department that has seen Lahiru Kumara return. Eshan Malinga earns his maiden international call thanks to some excellent performances in domestic games.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bat first.
While the Basin Reserve has traditionally helped the faster bowlers, it has hosted some high-scoring matches in recent years. The surface is hard and flat and playing shots will be easy once a batsman has settled down. That said, the seamers still enjoy plenty of help if they hit the deck hard. The team batting first will look to score around 280-300 runs. The pitch becomes two-paced in the second half, making it difficult to time the ball.
The weather will remain overcast and we may see interruptions due to rain.
Barring the last match, New Zealand was clinical in its performance during the T20 series. In this series, New Zealand has also announced a strong squad. Although the team is in transition, there are quite a few quality players who can win the match for them. That said, Sri Lanka showed on Thursday that they are no pushovers, and we can expect a close match.
Bet on New Zealand to win.
