This should be reasonable given the power-hitting strength of the visitors. In the last match between the two teams at St George’s Park, Jon-Jon Smuts hit seven sixes alone out of a team total of 16 sixes.
The Super Giants would need to have a superb powerplay for this bet to come true. They have aggressive opening batters who can take charge of the powerplay though. In their previous match against Sunrisers Eastern Cape in Gqeberha, they managed 59 for one in six overs.
Durban’s Super Giants have had their moments this season, but will need to build consistency. They achieved all three outcomes of a win, a loss and a no result in their opening three games. On the other hand, Sunrisers Eastern cape have been dismal with three losses in their first three games.
These teams will play each other twice in three days. Before the start of the 2025 season, the Sunrisers Eastern Cape won three matches in a row against the Durban’s Super Giants. They won both Qualifier one and the Final in Cape Town against their opposition. The Super Giants beat the Sunrisers in Gqeberha last year.
This captivating SA20 clash is set for Sunday, 19 January 2025 at St George’s Park in Gqeberha. The fixture between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Durban’s Super Giants will be aired in India on the Star Sports 2 Network for TV broadcast and the Disney+ Hotstar app for live-streaming.
Aiden Markram will have his work cut out for him to guide the Sunrisers to three titles in a row. David Bedingham and Zak Crawley will open the innings. Both will play to their strengths and can adjust as the situation requires. Crawley scored a valuable 38 runs against Durban in Durban.
Tom Abell adds depth and versatility, while equally capable of playing a game-changing innings. The English batter hit a telling half-century in his previous match. The middle order shines with Jordan Hermann and wicketkeeper-batter Tristan Stubbs. They are two exciting young South African prospects. Hermann is one run away from 500 SA20 runs.
All-rounder Marco Jansen combines tall pace and difficult bounce with valuable lower order runs, much like his unbeaten 36 off 26 only two days ago. Liam Dawson's experience as a spin-bowling all-rounder adds a strategic edge for Markram to work with.
He is complemented by Simon Harmer's guileful off-spin. The off-spinner has best bowling figures of four for 18 in South Africa’s premier T20 competition.
The pace attack features Richard Gleeson and Ottneil Baartman. They promise to trouble batters with pace and accuracy. Each of Gleeson, Baartman and Dawson took two wickets in the previous match against the Super Giants.
The batting core features the reliable Black Cap Kane Williamson with his consistency and calm leadership. He should be the glue to hold the Super Giants batting lineup together. The New Zealander has one century and 46 half-centuries in the 20-over format.
The explosive Quinton de Kock doubles as the wicketkeeper. The former Protea has 575 SA20 runs, including five half-centuries. Matthew Breetzke and Bryce Parsons add youthful flair and potentially a quickfire start to proceedings. Heinrich Klaasen’s middle-order power is vital in either saving the game or completely taking the game away from the opposition.
Wiaan Mulder and Jason Smith are two key all-rounders. They are equally capable of changing the face of the game as batters or bowlers and both have Protea experience. Mulder has largely done his business with the bat by scoring 534 runs in the SA20, but has also taken eight wickets.
In the bowling department, Chris Woakes brings international experience and all-round skills with the new ball and at the death. The English all-rounder has 176 T20 wickets. Keshav Maharaj’s spin prowess is complemented by the exciting Noor Ahmad.
The young Afghan left-arm wrist-spinner is capable of troubling the best in limited overs formats. He showed exactly that with bowling figures of four for 25 in four overs against the Sunrisers previously.
Naveen-ul-Haq rounds out a potent attack with his crafty pace and seam variations. The Afghan speedster has 257 T20 wickets, including six four-wicket hauls and one five-wicket haul.
The last time the Sunrisers and Super Giants met in Gqeberha it was the team batting first who came up trumps. The Durban’s Super Giants elected to bat first in that match. Both teams could be happy doing the same in this match.
The pitch at St George's Park in Gqeberha is known for its slower pace and tendency to assist spinners as the game progresses. The days of sun leading up to matchday should make this quite a dry surface. The pitch often provides a fair balance between bat and ball. The seamers could enjoy early movement and spinners coming into play later. There were 415 runs scored in 40 overs between the teams when they last played at St George’s Park.
The weather on Sunday is expected to be partly cloudy with hot and humid temperatures. In addition, there is a 15 percent chance of rain.
The Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s form last year may be an inaccurate depiction of what to expect this season. The team from the Eastern Cape’s results in 2025 have been far from last year’s output. The Super Giants haven’t been perfect themselves this year either, but they have experienced a tight win in their 2025 season opener. They will be hunting another away victory like last year and could be favorites to do so.
Bet on Durban’s Super Giants to win this match.
