The English batter is a world-class all-format batter which makes him a safe bet. He has over 2600 T20 runs in his career. His recent form is also worth noting. Root hit 62 runs not out against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in his previous match at Paarl.
The Paarl Royals may look to set themselves up for the rest of the innings with a conservative approach in the opening few overs. The opening batters only scored five runs in their opening over when they last played at home.
You can expect the stadium to be buzzing and the stadium to be packed for another Western Cape derby only two days after the previous one. Paarl Royals return to familiar territory in front of their home crowd and on their own pitch. Both teams have strong batting lineups, but the points could ultimately go to the team which is able to rotate strike better.
Paarl Royals return home after a loss on the road to their Cape Town rivals. The win for MI Cape Town in Cape Town on Monday further extends their positive record against Paarl Royals. MI Cape Town have beaten Paarl Royals four times in five matches. Paarl Royals have one win in that time.
This is an SA20 match between Paarl Royals and MI Cape Town on Wednesday, 15 January 2025 at Boland Park, Paarl. In India, this SA20 match is available via the Star Sports 2 Network for TV broadcast and Disney+ Hotstar app for live-streaming.
The batting unit looks strong with the versatile English pair of Joe Root and Sam Hain forming the backbone of the top order. Root hit a quickfire 26 runs off 14 balls at Newlands. Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Mitchell van Buuren add local depth as two up-and-coming South African batters.
Pretorius has smashed 123 runs at a batting strike rate of almost 200 in his first two innings this tournament. The ever-reliable David Miller will need to show off his finishing prowess in high-pressure moments.
The Royals’ middle-order options are bolstered by all-rounder Dayyaan Galiem who provides balance as a key batter and bowler. The all-rounder took three wickets against MI Cape Town at Newlands. Behind the stumps, the seasoned Dinesh Karthik brings invaluable experience and a cool head in tight situations.
Many of the younger players will feed off his knowledge. Veteran Karthik has 34 T20 half-centuries.
On the bowling front, Bjorn Fortuin and Mujeeb Ur Rahman will be key to controlling the middle overs with their crafty spin. The Afghan spinner Ur Rahman has best bowling figures in T20s of five for 15.
South Africa’s pace spearhead Lungi Ngidi and promising seamer Kwena Maphaka will lead the fast-bowling attack with a combination of clever skills and raw pace. Experienced fast bowler Ngidi has five T20 four-wicket hauls and one T20 five-wicket haul.
Led by the world-class Rashid Khan, the team’s bowling attack looks lethal and capable of being threatening in any conditons. The skipper has 624 T20 wickets. With Kagiso Rabada and Trent Boult leading the pace battery, MI Cape Town can wreak havoc in the powerplay. Rabada opened his spell in cape Town with two wicket maidens in a row.
He ended with bowling figures of two for 22 in four overs. Rashid himself remains the premier spin option with all-rounder George Linde providing additional support as a finger-spinner.
In the batting department, South African stars Ryan Rickelton, Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen bring class to the top order. They will be familiar with South African batting conditions. Rickelton will double up as the wicketkeeper, while van der Dussen and Hendricks offer proven consistency in the 20-over format. Rickelton has 295 SA20 runs in his last eight innings while striking at over 160.
Hendricks hit a half-century in his previous SA20 innings with van der Dussen also making a 43-run contribution. The middle order features power-hitters like Colin Ingram and exciting youngster Dewald Brevis. Both will take the attacking approach.
Delano Potgieter and Afghan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai offer crucial lower-order hitting and depth to the lineup. They will give captain Khan plenty of options to work with. Potgieter has more than 1000 runs and almost 40 wickets in T20s.
When the teams last met in Paarl, MI Cape Town won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Paarl Royals won the game by batting first. Neither team may be too fussed by the toss not landing in their favour, but the captains may prefer bowling first under lights.
This could be a low-scoring game where every run counts. The spinners and slower bowlers are generally more effective in Paarl. The expected rain on the previous night may have a slight effect on the ball seaming off the surface early on, but it should largely be on the slower side with not a lot of sideways movement. Strike rotation could be key at Boland Park. Paarl Royals scored 162 for three in 20 overs when they last met MI Cape Town at home.
Paarl is expected to experience some warm weather on matchday. Conditions above will be sunny while also feeling humid. There is only a five percent chance of rain, but that may not affect the match at all.
This should be another cracker in front of one of the best supported franchises in the SA20. The Paarl Royals may hold the slight advantage because of their previous home win against MI Cape Town. The Royals also won their first home game this season. MI Cape Town lost their previous away game.
Bet on Paarl Royals to win this match.
