This pitch is likely to produce a delivery with the batter’s name on it. If batters fail to adapt to the slower conditions early, they may lose their wicket without troubling the scorers. In the previous head-to-head, Keshav Maharaj and Joe Root made scores of zero.
The young left-handed opening batter has found his second home in Paarl since joining the franchise. Pretorius has scores of 93, 83 and 27 at Boland Park in his first three SA20 games at the ground. He should be a relatively safe bet.
The match in Paarl brings together two teams with polar opposite seasons until now. After six matches, Paarl Royals were standing on top of the table and Durban’s Super Giants were rooted to the bottom of the table. It should come as no surprise if the team from Paarl do the double over their opponents from Durban.
Things have been fairly even over the five matches that the Paarl Royals and Durban’s Super Giants have played in the SA20. The Paarl Royals won the previous match in January 2025 as one of their two wins overall. The Durban’s Super Giants have won three times against their hosts.
The Paarl Royals will welcome the Durban’s Super Giants to Boland Park, Paarl for this SA20 match on Monday, 27 January 2025. Follow the action in India on the Star Sports 2 Network TV broadcast or the Disney+ Hotstar app live-streaming.
All eyes will be on international star Joe Root. The English batter is calm yet authoritative at the batting crease. Root hit a brilliant 78 runs unbeaten in Paarl against the Capitals in his previous home game.
Young talent Lhuan-dre Pretorius promises to excite with his aggressive stroke play and fearless approach against all types of bowling. Mitchell van Buuren adds stability to the batting unit as someone who can build an innings and pick out the boundary in the short formats.
The inclusion of Rubin Hermann strengthens the squad's depth in batting as another powerful left-hander. Hermann hit an impressive half-century in his first game of this SA20 season.
Skipper David Miller is one of T20 cricket's finest finishers. He will anchor the middle order and rally the team in the field with his exceptional leadership and sometimes out of the box thinking. The left-handed batter hit a captivating 29 not out off 18 balls against Pretoria. Veteran keeper Dinesh Karthik brings sharp glovework and explosive batting in the finisher role.
In the bowling department, seamer Dayyaan Galiem is the sole pace bowler in the lineup. Bjorn Fortuin and Sri Lanka’s rising star Dunith Wellalage are two key left-arm finger-spinners. The Sri Lankan has 54 T20 wickets. Mujeeb Ur Rahman brings spin wizardry.
Mystery-spinner Nqabayomzi Peter rounds out the spin attack. The Paarl Royals attack has all bases covered where spin is concerned. They became the first team to use spin bowling for their entire 20 overs when they played against Pretoria Capitals. Fortuin, Ur Rahman and Root all bagged two wickets in the previous match at Boland Park.
Opening the innings are Quinton de Kock and Brandon King with a mix of aggression and consistency. Their T20 credentials make them star batters to watch out for. Quinton de Kock doubles as the wicketkeeper.
With the bat he gives explosive power and experience at the top. The left-hander has more than 600 SA20 runs with five half-centuries. West Indian opening batter King has a T20 high score of 132 not out. Matthew Breetzke will follow suit as a well-known boundary-hitter. He has 19 half-centuries in T20s.
New Zealander Kane Williamson provides a calm head on his shoulders to withstand pressure. The dynamic Heinrich Klaasen strengthens the middle order with his ability to dominate spin. Williamson and Klaasen combined for a fifth-wicket partnership at Newlands which kept the Super Giants alive against MI Cape Town.
Williamson scored 56 not out and Klaasen scored 66 runs in their previous SA20 innings. He will likely face a large amount of spin on a dry Boland Park pitch. All-rounders Wiaan Mulder and Marcus Stoinis lend depth to both batting and bowling. They will give Keshav Maharaj an abundance of options to work with.
Skipper Keshav Maharaj leads the spin attack. He was economical while picking up a wicket at Newlands. The crafty Prenelan Subrayen and the prodigious Noor Ahmad will be there to support the left-arm finger-spinner.
The Afghan wrist-spinner has thrived in T20 leagues globally. He is four wickets away from 150 T20 wickets. Speedster Junior Dala completes the bowling lineup with his raw pace. He took two wickets against Paarl previously.
The Paarl Royals were happy chasing in Durban because that brought them a five-wicket win. Both captains may look to chase in Paarl too.
The Boland Park pitch in Paarl is generally slow and challenging for run-scoring at times. Batting teams will need to be realistic about what totals will be within expectations. The spinners could dictate terms on the slower and turning pitch in Paarl. The first innings total was 190 for three in 20 overs by the Durban’s Super Giants when this match was hosted in Paarl in 2024.
The players should expect typical Paarl weather with hot and humid temperatures. There is only a five percent chance of rain mainly at night, but this should not be a major threat to the match. Overhead conditions will be partly cloudy.
The Durban’s Super Giants are running out of games to claim points from. Their poor form just does not look likely to end. The Paarl Royals can extend their run upwards and will hope to continue their winning momentum as the SA20 playoffs approach.
Bet on Paarl Royals to win this match.
