This seems like a plausible bet to stake your money. The previous home game for the Joburg Super Kings was against the Pretoria Capitals. That game started with a dot ball bowled by Donovan Ferreira.
The Joburg captain should be a safe bet, particularly on home turf. The former Protea has been a consistent run-getter for the Super Kings. In 2023, he hit 92 runs off 61 balls against Sunrisers Eastern Cape at the Wanderers Stadium.
Both teams have been hovering around the middle of the table during this season. Points either way could be telling as the race for the knockout rounds heats up. The teams have been on opposite ends of the spectrum where results are concerned. The Sunrisers Eastern Cape started slowly before picking up some important wins. The Joburg Super Kings won their first two games before a no result and a few losses crept in.
The Sunrisers Eastern Cape edge this head-to-head by three wins to the Joburg Super Kings’ two wins. They were involved in an abandoned match in 2024. The Sunrisers won the previous match only days ago in Gqeberha by 14 runs.
This exciting SA20 clash between Joburg Super Kings and Sunrisers Eastern Cape is set for Sunday, 26 January 2025 at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. There will be a TV broadcast on the Star Sports 2 Network and live-streaming on the Disney+ Hotstar app for Indian viewers.
Faf du Plessis will need to steer the Super Kings ship with the bat and in the field. His performance on the field will most likely dictate the fortunes of the team. Du Plessis has one century and six half-centuries in the SA20. The veteran skipper will be complemented by the likes of Devon Conway as his opening partner.
Conway, although plying his trade in New Zealand now, will have fond memories to work with in South African batting conditions. The Black Cap played a composed knock of 43 runs off 40 balls in his previous innings.
South African-born Leus du Plooy and the dynamic Englishman Jonny Bairstow will put their feet down on the accelerator to get the Super Kings constantly moving along in the middle overs. Left-handed du Plooy has five SA20 half-centuries. Wicketkeeper-batter Bairstow has four centuries and 29 half-centuries in T20 cricket.
The middle order features Wihan Lubbe and Donovan Ferreira, both of whom have shown promise in domestic cricket. Their left-right batting combination will mean the bowlers constantly need to adjust their lines and lengths. Lubbe has more than 350 runs in the SA20.
All-rounder Evan Jones took two wickets against the Sunrisers while the side were away at St George’s Park.
The fast-bowling attack is equally impressive with Hardus Viljoen and Lutho Sipamla forming a potent pace duo. The pace bowling lineup has the perfect blend of experience in Viljoen mixed with the youthful energy of Sipamla. Veteran Viljoen has nearly 180 wickets in T20s.
Right-arm pacer Sipamla has 71 T20 wickets. The spin department is graced with the presence of Imran Tahir. Maheesh Theekshana, 21 years junior to Tahir, has made his mark in white-ball cricket internationally and domestically over the past few years.
Top order batters Zak Crawley and David Bedingham will look to provide a solid foundation through pressure in the powerplay. Tom Abell and Jordan Hermann offer exciting prospects in the middle order as batters who can up the run rate at will, especially if the team gets off to a brisk start. Englishman Abell has more than 450 SA20 runs.
Captain Aiden Markram is a seasoned campaigner as a natural leader. He will marshal his resources astutely in the field and bat with belligerence. Wicketkeeper-batter Tristan Stubbs adds energy in the field and can send the ball flying to the boundary like a tracer bullet.
All three Proteas Bedingham, Markram and Stubbs made starts in their previous innings. The trio hit 37, 43 and 35 not out respectively.
Tall left-arm pacer Marco Jansen leads this bowling lineup of the Orange Army. Liam Dawson is a useful addition to the lineup as a fighter with ball or bat in hand. The English left-arm spinner has 17 SA20 wickets.
Simon Harmer's spin and Ottneil Baartman's pace will be crucial in the middle overs to maintain the team’s wicket-taking threat. Richard Gleeson’s bowling at the start and end of the innings will be an important cog in the Sunrisers’ wheel.
The pace attack of Jansen, Baartman and Gleeson was devastating at home with each of them picking up two wickets against Joburg.
The previous match between these teams in Johannesburg was won by the visitors. The Sunrisers Eastern Cape elected to bowl first and won by nine wickets. Both captains may insist on bowling first again.
The pitch at the Wanderers Stadium should assist the pace bowlers with the new ball. Early swing will be complemented by pace and bounce off the wicket. The batters will remain in the game with this venue traditionally being a batter's paradise in white-ball cricket. Joburg Super Kings scored 160 for six in 20 overs in their first ever SA20 home match against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
There is no chance of rain on Sunday in Johannesburg. The hot temperatures nearing 30 degrees Celsius during the day will continue into the evening and night when this game will be played. The temperatures will feel moderately humid too.
SEC thumped JSK in last year’s match in Johannesburg. The Joburg Super Kings have started to show cracks in their performances of late. The Sunrisers Eastern Cape current home and away form could pip them to the favorites tag for this match. We see a fifth run on the trot for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Bet on Sunrisers Eastern Cape to win this match.
