The English superstar batter has dominated the top franchise T20 leagues globally. He has another chance to impose his dominance in the format. He would be worth betting on in this match-up because he has been in the top two run-scorers for Joburg Super Kings in every one of the four matches against them in the tournament’s history.
There is logic to this bet based on previous history between the home side and the visitors. MI Cape Town only managed to score five runs off their first over when they last met. Moeen Ali managed to contain the MI Cape Town opening batters to five singles in the over.
This will be the first match of the season for Joburg Super Kings compared to MI Cape Town in their second game. The Super Kings will want to take full advantage of playing at the Wanderers Stadium and entertaining their home crowd. MI Cape Town will be looking to turn around their fortunes in the tournament’s history.
The Super Kings and MI Cape Town have met each other four times in the SA20. Each of the teams have won by batting first and bowling first. They have each won twice against the other.
This SA20 fixture between Joburg Super Kings and MI Cape Town is scheduled for Saturday, 11 January 2025 at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. You can expect to find this match in India on the Star Sports 2 Network for the TV broadcast and the Disney+ Hotstar app for live-streaming.
Led by the charismatic Faf du Plessis, this team is a well-rounded mix of experience, explosive batting and dynamic bowling options. The South African hit 50 runs unbeaten off 20 balls against MI Cape Town in the previous head-to-head.
At the top of the order, Leus du Plooy and Devon Conway form a reliable opening partnership. Du Plooy has 329 runs in his previous ten SA20 games. Conway, doubling as wicketkeeper, will play a key role in anchoring the innings and leading the team by being tidy behind the stumps.
In the middle-order, Sibonelo Makhanya and Moeen Ali add depth and versatility. Moeen is a world-class all-rounder known for his power-hitting and effective off-spin bowling used in any time of the innings.
The Englishman top-scored versus Durban’s Super Giants with 30 runs in his previous SA20 innings. Donovan Ferreira is a finisher who has proven his worth domestically.
The bowling attack is diverse and potent. Gerald Coetzee and Lizaad Williams will lead the pace unit. Williams has 14 wickets in his last seven SA20 matches. Both have also made names for themselves in the Proteas setup. Maheesh Theekshana is a right-arm mystery spinner who will bowl in partnership with veteran Imran Tahir.
Nandre Burger is a left-arm pacer who adds variety to the attack with his left-arm angle. He claimed two wickets in the previous match against the Durban’s Super Giants.
The batting unit features the experienced Rassie van der Dussen and Reeza Hendricks. Both are reliable anchors capable of setting a strong foundation in the powerplay. Van der Dussen has more than 6000 T20 runs.
Youngster Dewald Brevis adds flair and power with his dynamic stroke play. Brevis has a high score of 162 in domestic T20 cricket and hit a half-ton in the first match of this year’s SA20. Colin Ingram brings a wealth of experience to the middle order.
Wicketkeeper-batter Connor Esterhuizen is another young talent looking to impress. He has a batting high score of 62 not out in T20 cricket.
In the all-round department, Delano Potgieter and Azmatullah Omarzai provide depth and versatility as pinch-hitters and medium-pace bowlers. Potgieter’s big-hitting capabilities and Omarzai’s seam bowling add balance to the side.
The team’s lower order is strengthened by George Linde as a handy left-arm spinner and aggressive batter. The all-rounder has more than 2000 runs and more than 170 wickets in T20s.
Skipper Rashid Khan leads a potent bowling attack. The Afghan leg-spinner has an incredible 16 four-wicket hauls in T20s. His world-renowned leg-spin combined with Trent Boult’s lethal left-arm swing will be key in taking early wickets in the periods during and just after the powerplay.
Boult completed a double-wicket maiden against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape earlier this week. The New Zealander has more than 270 wickets in his T20 career. Corbin Bosch adds pace to the attack. He will be confident after playing in Proteas colours recently.
On a fresh surface in Johannesburg, neither captain may hesitate to bowl first. Joburg Super Kings won against MI Cape Town in January 2024 by bowling first.
This pitch may have a bit of life in it for the bowlers due the inclement weather in days leading up to this as well as on the day. The Wanderers is generally known for its pace and bounce, but the damp conditions may add a bit of seam movement to that too. Batters generally thrive at this ground so we may have a high-scoring game. MI Cape Town hit 243 for five in 20 overs when the teams met in Johannesburg last.
There is a 45 percent chance of rain on Saturday in Johannesburg which may affect conditions in this game. Besides the possibility of scattered thunderstorms, the weather should feel extremely warm due to the high level of humidity.
The Joburg Super Kings have had an indifferent time in their SA20 history. They have managed to make the play-offs on both occasions, but have come short in the knockouts twice. MI Cape Town have consistently slumped to the bottom of the table in both their seasons, but could be buoyed by their recent win over the Sunrisers.
Joburg’s slightly better returns in their two seasons may aid them in this match.
Bet on the Joburg Super Kings to win this match.
