The fiery middle order batter will be looking to ramp up the run rate in his home conditions. Given his stellar performance in the 2023/24 SA20, he should be set for a profitable innings in Durban.
This should be a safe bet, considering the nature of run-scoring in this fixture. Besides the rained off match between them in 2023, the four other fixtures between the Durban’s Super Giants and Sunrisers Eastern Cape have never failed to feature a half-centurion.
Neither team had a great game in their previous outing. Both teams lost their last game. The Durban’s Super Giants lost at home to Joburg Super Kings by 28 runs. They could return to winning ways in front of their home stadium. Sunrisers Eastern Cape were thumped by six wickets at Centurion.
In the last five matches between the teams, the visitors have come good more often than their hosts. That is particularly true for the past three games where they achieved three consecutive victories, including the all-important Final for last year’s SA20. The Sunrisers Eastern Cape have won three of the past five matches. Durban’s Super Giants have won one of those five matches. One match was rained off.
Last year’s SA20 finalists will do battle for the first time in this year’s SA20 at Kingsmead in Durban. The match is between Durban’s Super Giants and Sunrisers Eastern Cape. The Star Sports 2 Network for TV broadcast and the Disney+ Hotstar app for live-streaming will be the go-to places for Indian viewers.
The top order will be spearheaded by the dynamic West Indian Brandon King with his textbook technique and supreme power. King has more than 3500 T20 runs. The talented Matthew Breetzke will work alongside King. Wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock is a proven match-winner with both bat and gloves. The South African scored an impressive half-century in his previous innings.
The all-round department looks strong with Wiaan Mulder and Jason Smith providing stability and firepower in all three of the batting, bowling and fielding. Mulder has more than 500 SA20 runs and almost ten SA20 wickets. Heinrich Klaasen is known for his aggressive finishing.
The power-hitter will be a key figure in the middle order. The experienced Chris Woakes is a threatening wicket-taker with the swinging new ball. The English player has over 170 wickets in T20s.
Leading the spin attack is captain Keshav Maharaj. The left-arm spinner will be supported by another Durban local in Prenelan Subrayen. Young Afghan sensation Noor Ahmad is another spinner who can trouble any batting lineup.
The wrist-spinner has 14 SA20 wickets. The pace attack will be anchored by the ever-reliable Naveen-ul-Haq with variety and control. Subrayen, Woakes and Maharaj were the most difficult customers to face if you are a Joburg Super King. Each of the three bowlers took two wickets at Centurion.
Captain Aiden Markram will lead from the front as a stable force with the bat in the middle order. The inclusion of England’s Zak Crawley and Tom Abell boosts their top order with reliable run-getters. Zak Crawley has 1171 runs in England’s Vitality T20 Blast.
David Bedingham brings explosive power to their batting lineup. Bedingham hit 106 runs in three innings of South Africa’s former T20 league, the Mzansi Super League.
The hard-hitting Tristan Stubbs doubles as a part-time wicketkeeper. The young sensation will change the face of the match when he gets going. Stubbs has three SA20 half-centuries. All-rounder Marco Jansen offers balance with his left-arm pace and big-hitting abilities. Jansen showed his ability to perform when his team is under pressure. The tall all-rounder hit a half-century against Pretoria Capitals.
In the bowling department, the spin of Simon Harmer provides control and wicket-taking options in the middle overs. He may be effective on a slower coastal surface.
The pace trio of Craig Overton, Ottneil Baartman and Richard Gleeson will look to exploit South African conditions and any movement in the opening couple of overs. Gleeson took two wickets in his previous bowling spell. Both Overton and Baartman backed him up with one wicket each.
When Durban’s Super Giants and Sunrisers Eastern Cape last faced off in Durban, the match was won by the visitors after they chased a score in the 160s. Both captains may see this as another chasing wicket.
Joburg Super Kings managed a total of 169 for seven in their 20 overs when they batted first against Durban’s Super Giants. The pitch should give an equal offering to batters and bowlers alike. The seam bowlers will need to make the most of their opportunities with the hard, new ball.
Once the ball softens, you can expect the batters to cash in and try to clear the ropes with great frequency. The spinners may be difficult to hit away if they choose to bowl with clever variations of pace.
Conditions on matchday are expected to be overcast and cloudy. The looming clouds may not be too much to worry about with only a ten percent chance of rain. Temperatures will be hot and humid.
The Super Giants have a stronger batting lineup with a lot many more players in form. SEC is struggling with three losses on the trot and we think it could be in line for a fourth straight loss here.
Bet on Durban's Super Giants to win.
