This is well within reason as a bet to go for. The first boundary in each innings of the Paarl Royals’ previous match was a four. Both came in the opening over and Paarl Royals’ first boundary even came on their first ball of their batting innings.
This is a reasonable bet for these odds. The previous head-to-head between the Super Giants and Royals had 17 wickets in the match. Both teams have also shown batting frailties at times.
The teams have had vastly different starts to their first five games of the tournament. The Paarl Royals were top of the table with 16 points in comparison to the Durban’s Super Giants with nine points in fifth. The visitors have built momentum with three wins on the trot.
Durban’s Super Giants and Paarl Royals have met four times in the competition’s history. The Super Giants have claimed three wins in that time. The Royals have only won once against their hosts.
In India, the Star Sports 2 Network and Disney+ Hotstar app will give the TV broadcast and live-streaming respectively for this match. The Durban’s Super Giants will host the Paarl Royals at Kingsmead in Durban on Thursday, 23 January 2025.
Matthew Breetzke adds flair and an attacking approach alongside West Indian Brandon King’s powerful boundary hitting. The Jamaican has more than 3500 T20 runs. The batting unit is spearheaded by Kiwi Kane Williamson as a cool and calm customer under pressure.
He has an SA20 batting average over 50. Heinrich Klaasen's role will be to add the finishing touches to a lineup that will take the game to the Paarl bowlers. The blistering batter is only 13 runs away from 5000 T20 runs.
All-rounders Wiaan Mulder and Dwaine Pretorius provide a perfect blend of stability and aggression. They have played international white-ball cricket, so they will be accustomed to the spotlight of playing under pressure. The 35-year-old Pretorius has 19 SA20 wickets.
Keshav Maharaj is the team's astute captain. He leads the spin department alongside the young and promising Noor Ahmad to add variety. Wrist-spinner Ahmad took four for 25 against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
The pace attack features Junior Dala and the wily Naveen-ul-Haq. Both are strong contenders to take early wickets. Dala has best bowling figures in the SA20 of five for 26.
Englishman Joe Root brings his world-class experience as an anchor and attacking batter. On either side of Root will be the young guns of Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Mitchell van Buuren and Rubin Hermann. All three won’t shy away from attacking flair and a mindset of putting the bowlers under constant pressure.
Pretorius has taken this year’s SA20 by storm with 233 runs in only five innings. Van Buuren played a mature knock of 44 runs off 45 balls in his previous SA20 innings.
The middle order is solidified by the ever-reliable skipper David Miller. Known for his finishing prowess, Miller will guide the team with his calm demeanour in the field and powerful boundary striking. The left-hander guided his team home in Paarl with 40 runs unbeaten.
Joining him is the experienced wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik with sharp glovework and the temperament for any pressure situation. All-rounder Dayyaan Galiem is a key weapon in both batting and bowling lineups. His best SA20 bowling figures of three for 24 came against MI Cape Town earlier this month.
The bowling unit is diverse and threatening. Spin is well-covered by internationals Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Dunith Wellalage as well as local boy Bjorn Fortuin. Fortuin took two wickets against Joburg Super Kings. Mujeeb Ur Rahman has eight wickets in his previous five SA20 matches.
Pace sensation Kwena Maphaka will continue to fulfil his promise since making his mark on the international stage.
The Paarl Royals may have found their key to success by chasing. Each of their three consecutive wins has come via batting second. Both captains may also take night conditions into account in wanting to bowl first.
The pitch at Kingsmead should be favourable for the fast bowlers with the new ball. There should be enough bounce and sideways movement to challenge the batters. As conditions change, the spinners could be key in slowing down the pace of the run rate and grabbing wickets in the middle overs. The batters should be able to score runs if they are clever with their scoring options.
The Paarl Royals chased 147 against the Joburg Super Kings. A first innings total above 180 runs will be much more challenging to chase.
Matchday conditions should be mostly cloudy with some hot and humid temperatures during the night. There is a ten percent chance of rain during the match.
The team from Durban have had a mixture of results on home turf. They will be looking to improve that record when they meet the team from the Western Cape. Paarl Royals look to be hitting form at the perfect time for this match.
They have improved their batting strategy when chasing. The Royals should be strong favorites to take crucial points away from home.
Bet on Paarl Royals to win this match.
