Pretoria Capitals’ bowling lacks balance in the spin department
The pitch at Kingsmead offers plenty of help to the bowlers, especially the seamers. 3 of the last 4 SA20 matches played here have seen 14 or more wickets fall and we are expecting that trend to continue.
Klaasen is the most successful batsman in SA20 and has scored 810 runs at an average of 47.64. He has scored 166 runs in his 4 innings against the Capitals and we are backing him to play well here.
As the 3rd edition of SA20 gets underway this week, the Durban Super Giants will begin their campaign on Friday as they host the Pretoria Capitals at the Kingsmead Stadium.
The two teams have faced each other in 4 matches, winning 2 games each.
This match will be live-streamed on the Jio Cinema app and Sports 18 Network.
The Durban Super Giants played well last year, finishing 2nd on the points table. They went on to make it to the finals but were defeated by Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
The Durban Super Giants boast a strong repertoire of all-rounders including Marcus Stoinis, JJ Smuts, Dwaine Pretorius, and Wiaan Mulder. They not only add depth to the batting but are also capable bowlers who can pick up wickets when needed.
The top order however looks a bit weak.
Brandon King is likely to be in the opening slot and could be joined by Quinton de Kock. The latter hasn’t been in the best of forms recently and will need to get some runs under his belt. The team has also brought in Kane Williamson and this will be his first appearance in the SA20. Given his frequent injuries, it remains to be seen how he performs.
Heinrich Klaasen is likely to be the Super Giants’ key player. If he continue to play in the sort of manner we took for granted last season, the Super Giants will be very difficult to stop.
The spin attack is pretty strong thanks to the presence of two world-class spinners, Noor Ahmad and Keshav Maharaj. However, the departure of Reece Topley means the franchise will depend heavily on Shamar Joseph, Junior Dala, and Naveen ul Haq.
The Pretoria Capitals were the runners-up of the first season. However, they were unable to maintain the same amount of consistency in the second edition and failed to make it to the playoffs.
In a big shuffle, Rilee Rossouw takes over the mantle of the team from Wayne Parnell. While Rossouw himself is known for his explosive batting and experience in T20 leagues around the world, he will have the support of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Will Jacks, Will Smeed, and Liam Livingstone in the batting line-up.
There is a lot of skill in this lineup. We like Will Jacks and Liam Livingstone, in particular, and think they are likely to make a big impact.
Pretoria Capitals purchased Marques Ackerman during the auction and that adds to the depth in batting.
Coming to the pace attack, the Pretoria Capitals have plenty of experience thanks to the presence of Anrich Nortje Wayne Parnell, Daryn Dupavillon, and Eathan Bosch. However, they will have to rely on the all-round abilities of Senuran Muthusamy when it comes to spin.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bat first.
The pitch at Kingsmead usually favors the bowlers as there is some grass on the surface and also some moisture. There is plenty of movement when the ball is new. However, as the batsmen spend time in the middle, playing shots will get easier. The team batting first will look to score around 170-180 runs. The weather is likely to be cloudy and humid with temperatures of around 25 degrees.
The Durban Super Giants and Pretoria Capitals have been inconsistent in their journey through the last two editions. While there is no clear favorite, we feel that the Durban Super Giants have a slight edge thanks to a stronger batting unit.
Bet on the Durban Super Giants to win.
