This is worth betting on. Based on their previous innings, the Durban’s Super Giants lost three batters to the caught mode of dismissal. One of those was a caught behind too. Matthew Breetzke was the first batter to be dismissed after he was caught off the sharp fielding of Rilee Rossouw.
This should be a reliable bet. The first boundary to be hit in Durban’s Super Giants encounter with Pretoria Capitals was a boundary four inside the first over. Both opening batters will be looking to clear the inner ring for boundaries inside the powerplay.
This match sets up two teams that made it to the knockout stage of 2024. The Super Giants were convincingly beaten at the final hurdle to eventual winners, Sunrisers Eastern Cape. The team from Durban were the team that stopped the Joburg Super Kings progressing. The visitors will seek revenge this year.
These teams have largely been evenly matched. In the last five matches between them, the Super Kings have won three matches and the Super Giants have won twice. The Super Giants won Qualifier two against the Joburg Super Kings in Johannesburg last year.
Durban’s Super Giants will be hosting the Joburg Super Kings at Kingsmead on Tuesday, 14 January 2025 for this SA20 match. The match will be available to the Indian audience on the Star Sports 2 Network TV broadcast and Disney+ Hotstar app live-stream.
The Super Giants have the experienced hometown boy in Keshav Maharaj as their captain. The left-arm spinner has more than 150 T20 wickets. The classy Kane Williamson follows the two power-packed opening batters of Bryce Parsons and Matthew Breetzke.
The New Zealander hit a classy unbeaten 60 runs to get his team over the line against the Pretoria Capitals. Quinton de Kock is the wicketkeeper, but will be taking on a different role in the middle-order rather than opening the batting. Heinrich Klaasen is known for his quickfire runs both while chasing and giving his team an extra punch when setting targets. Klaasen has more than 800 SA20 runs, including a stellar season of four half-centuries in 2023/24.
All-rounders Wiaan Mulder and Dwaine Pretorius add crucial depth and variety to the lineup as players who can do the job with bat and ball. Mulder and Parsons made 45 runs not out and 47 runs respectively against the Capitals.
England’s Chris Woakes and Afghanistan’s crafty seamer Naveen-ul-Haq will do new ball duties. They are perfect exponents of clever swing bowling. Teenage sensation Noor Ahmad, alongside Maharaj, should thrive on this Durban pitch. Woakes and Ahmad both bagged two wickets in their previous home game.
Leading the Joburg Super Kings side is Faf du Plessis. He is a seasoned captain known for his aggressive leadership and consistency at the top. Du Plessis hit 30 off 23 against MI Cape Town. Partnering him is New Zealander Devon Conway. He is an equally reliable opening batter.
The middle order features explosive hitters like Leus du Plooy, Jonny Bairstow (who doubles as wicketkeeper) and the versatile Wihan Lubbe. All three will ensure that the Super Kings have the batting firepower to take the game deep while persisting with a powerful run rate. Yorkshireman Bairstow has over 5000 T20 runs with four centuries in the format.
Donovan Ferreira adds finishing prowess. The power-hitter has 289 SA20 runs. Veteran all-rounder David Wiese provides both lower-order fireworks and key overs in the death. Wiese took one wicket against MI Cape Town, but importantly went for less than five runs an over. Rising talent Evan Jones adds more balance as an emerging all-rounder.
In the bowling department, the Super Kings are well-covered. Sri Lankan sensation Matheesha Pathirana brings his unique slingy action. His yorkers will pose a threat in the death overs. Lutho Sipamla offers pace and skiddy bounce. The right-arm pacer has 71 T20 wickets in his career.
Left-arm wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi is a sensation as one of the world’s best T20 spinners.
In the previous match between Durban’s Super Giants and Joburg Super Kings at Kingsmead, the home team won the toss and chose to bat. They won the game by batting first. Both captains could see that as the winning formula again.
The new ball will be crucial for both sides. They will need to use every opportunity that get with the swinging new ball in the powerplay. Both teams in the previous SA20 match at Durban managed to score over 200 runs in their 20 overs. This may be a potentially lower-scoring game than that one, but should still offer a decent pitch for batters to score a significant number of runs. The spinners could make use of a slower pitch because of the ground’s coastal location.
This game should go the distance with no chance of rain on the day. Conditions will be mostly sunny while being hot and extremely humid.
Durban’s Super Giants and Joburg Super Kings should be in for a cracking game. They met three times last year, including an all-important knockout game won by Durban’s Super Giants. The Durban team also won their home game last year. A combination of home advantage and previous recent results make the Super Giants slight favorites.
Bet on the Durban's Super Giants to win this match.
