This is a likely bet for the South Africans. The batting unit will be less experienced, but will back their abilities to find the boundary in away conditions. The last time the Proteas batted against Pakistan in ODIs, they scored 31 fours and nine sixes.
The Proteas are likely to come out with a combination of aggression and caution in the opening powerplay. They will be wary of a strong Pakistani new ball bowling attack, but won’t necessarily go into their shell. The visitors scored 13 runs for no wicket in the first two overs when they last played against Pakistan.
The odds should be in favour of the home side. Their record in recent ODI matches against South Africa puts them as a solid pick. You can add in the factor of playing to their strengths in home conditions. The South Africans have picked a squad with a number of uncapped players in it, so they will be up against it.
Pakistan displayed a dominant performance on the shores of their tourists when the teams last met. Pakistan won the previous ODI series against South Africa three-nil. In the last five ODI matches against them, Pakistan have won four matches and South Africa have won once.
Pakistan will take on South Africa in their home ODI Tri-Series at the National Stadium in Karachi on Wednesday, 12 February 2025. The Sony Ten 5 channel will broadcast this match in India. The JioTV app will live-stream this match in India.
Pakistan has a strong left-hand/right-hand opening batting combination with Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam. Fakhar Zaman is a dynamic left-handed opener renowned for his aggressive stroke play. His ODI series started on a high with 84 runs against New Zealand. The aggressive left-hander is complemented by Babar Azam as a technically proficient and elegant right-hander.
Babar has consistently been among the top run-scorers globally. Kamran Ghulam is a promising middle-order batter. Ghulam has showcased his potential in Pakistani domestic cricket and is eager to make a mark on the international stage.
In a short span of seven ODI batting innings, Ghulam has one century and one half-century. Mohammad Rizwan as the team’s captain and wicketkeeper will need to show his resilience and come up with a match-winning batting innings.
All-rounder Salman Agha contributes with depth to the batting order and offers valuable overs with his off-spin. Agha has scored five half-centuries in ODIs with a four-wicket haul as well. Tayyab Tahir is another domestic cricket performer looking to translate that form into international success. He has seven centuries and 21 half-centuries in domestic List A cricket.
Khushdil Shah’s power-hitting abilities in the shorter formats will be crucial for the team to kick the run rate up a gear towards the death overs.
Shaheen Shah Afridi will be one of the biggest threats to the opposition with pace and swing in the first powerplay. His skills at the death are also impressive. He took three wickets against New Zealand in the opening match of the series.
Naseem Shah is a young pacer with impressive speeds for his age. He has proven to be a consistent wicket-taker in all formats of the game. Shah has scalped 42 ODI wickets in his career. Abrar Ahmed will be Mohammad Rizwan’s weapon in the middle overs with the ball. He is a tricky leg-spin bowler with plenty of mystery about him and variations which are tough to read. He took two wickets against New Zealand.
Mohammad Hasnain is another right-arm fast bowler in the Pakistan ranks. Hasnain’s express pace and ability to unsettle batters will be the perfect replacement for Haris Rauf.
Leading the Proteas team is captain Temba Bavuma. He is a composed batter in the 50-over game. The South African skipper has five centuries and four half-centuries in ODI cricket. Wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne offers reliability behind the stumps and versatility with the bat to jump around anywhere in the middle order of the batting.
All-rounder Wiaan Mulder contributes with both bat and ball, giving the team balance. He showed his classy batting skills with 64 runs against New Zealand. Spinner Tabraiz Shamsi brings a touch of mystery with his left-arm wrist spin.
The squad also welcomed several uncapped players eager to make their mark on the international stage. Matthew Breetzke was one of those who turned heads when he set the international stage alight in his first ODI knock. He scored a powerful 150 runs at a strike rate of just over 100 to get his Proteas ODI career going.
All-rounder Jason Smith adds depth with his dual capabilities as a top order batter and handy pace bowler. In his three-match ODI career, he has already accumulated 132 runs. Eathan Bosch is another player in that league of formidable pace bowlers who know how to hit runs in the middle and late overs of the innings.
The right-arm pacer took a wicket on ODI debut. Senuran Muthusamy is another capable batter and bowler. He offers left-arm orthodox spin and left-handed power-hitting. He was the top wicket-taker in the previous game with two poles.
Adding to the squad's dynamism is a player like Mihlali Mpongwana who has been around the squad before and is starting to fit into the ODI group. Junior Dala was last part of the South African team setup over half a decade ago. He will be looking to make up for lost time with key partnership-breaking wickets throughout the innings.
Speedster Dala has a significant domestic List A career with over 120 wickets. Lungi Ngidi is a prominent fast bowler who captain Bavuma can turn to for game-changing wickets. The experienced Protea sits only four wickets away from a milestone 100 ODI wickets.
Pakistan lost their first match of the ODI Tri-Series by chasing. They could turn their fortunes around by batting first in this match. New Zealand elected to bat first in that match. The South Africans will see batting first as their strength too.
The National Stadium in Karachi is renowned for its batting-friendly pitches. For the batters, they can expect consistent bounce and pace that allows them to play their shots freely. The venue has played host to some exciting high-scoring thrillers. The spinners should be effective on a pitch which should be typical of most subcontinental pitches. New Zealand scored 330 for six in 50 overs batting first in the ODI Tri-Series opener.
Throughout the day in Karachi, weather conditions will be scorching hot with humidity to add to the heat. The full game is likely to be played out because of only a one percent chance of rain.
Pakistan will be looking to continue their reign of dominance over the Proteas in 50-over cricket. The home side suffered a loss in their opening match. This match against South Africa offers them an opportunity to pick themselves up and regain confidence with a home victory. A large number of players in the South African squad will be better for the experience in a win or a loss.
The experience of the Pakistanis could be too much for them to handle.
Bet on Pakistan to win this match.
