In the previous match between these two teams before the start of this ODI series, these teams played out a high-scoring thriller. South Africa managed 21 fours and eight sixes to chase a target of 271. They may achieve a similarly high boundary count, but could be more dependent on their running between the wickets.
Pakistan has tended to start a bit conservatively over the years and we are very happy to take the risk with such enticing odds on offer.
Having just completed a white-ball series, both teams will be looking to reflect on and adapt their strengths and strategies to a longer format. South Africa will be buzzing after gaining momentum from their T20I series victory, however, their loss to Pakistan in the first ODI shows that they cannot take anything for granted. There is everything to play for in the 2nd ODI of the series!
South Africa has won four out of the previous 10 ODI matches against Pakistan. The last time they played each other in this format in South Africa was in 2021, when Pakistan won the series 2-1. Pakistan leads the current series 1-0 as well.
This will be the second ODI of the ODI series between South Africa and Pakistan. The game will take place at Newlands Cricket Stadium in Cape Town on Thursday, 19 December 2024. For Indian viewers, the live-stream is on the JioCinema app and the TV broadcast will be on the Sports18 channels.
South Africa’s ODI lineup is led by Aiden Markram. He will be replacing Temba Bavuma for the first ODI. Markram, the captain, is a stylish batter who anchors innings and provides a handy off-spin option. Tony de Zorzi adds promise and confidence at the top of the batting order with his classical technique and hunger for runs.
Tristan Stubbs is known for his aggressive batting in short-format cricket with style and flair. De Zorzi has 308 ODI runs in his last seven matches and Stubbs has 242 runs in his last six matches.
Heinrich Klaasen is pivotal in building momentum during the middle overs alongside Kyle Verreynne. The wicketkeeper-batter ensures stability and quick runs when needed. Verreynne contributed with 38 runs off 36 balls in South Africa’s final ODI against Ireland.
Veteran finisher David Miller adds calmness under pressure with his boundary-hitting prowess.
The all-rounder Marco Jansen provides a left-arm pace option and batting depth. Keshav Maharaj is a dependable left-arm finger-spinner. He could be a potent spin option alongside left-arm wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi. Shamsi starred with four wickets against Pakistan in last year’s ODI World Cup.
Pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada leads the bowling attack with skill and pace, while newcomer Ottniel Baartman offers fresh pace-bowling options to complement the attack. Baartman took two wickets in the third ODI against Ireland.
The Pakistan cricket team boasts a dynamic lineup with a blend of youth and experience. Saim Ayub is a promising left-handed opening batter. He showed his fearless stroke play and adaptability at the top of the batting order in the T20I series. In his last six ODIs, he has 280 runs.
Abdullah Shafique is a technically sound batter and opening partner to Ayub. He excels in building innings with his patience and classical technique. Shafique hit a half-century versus Zimbabwe. Babar Azam is the cornerstone of Pakistan's batting. The superstar combines elegance with consistency as well as the competency to play to the situation.
Kamran Ghulam provides stability and can play under pressure. He hit a century in his previous match against Zimbabwe. Captain and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan is a game-changer with his aggressive batting and leadership. Salman Agha contributes as a versatile all-rounder with useful off-spin and lower-order runs.
Irfan Khan is a budding all-round talent with potential. The bowling attack is led by the world-class left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi. His ability to swing the new ball at pace in the powerplay will be lethal. The blistering pace of Afridi has brought him 16 wickets in his last seven ODIs.
Haris Rauf adds aggression with his fiery pace, while Naseem Shah combines youthful exuberance with raw talent and more pace. Rauf has 21 wickets across his last ten ODI bowling innings. Abrar Ahmed is a mystery finger-spinner who is a crucial wicket-taking option with his unorthodox style.
Rauf and Ahmed both claimed two wickets each in the third ODI against Zimbabwe.
The captains may be in favour of batting first in this day/night fixture. The warm weather leading up to it may point towards it being the better option.
The pitch at Newlands is typically balanced between bat and ball. Early on, pacers benefit from the consistent bounce and lateral movement. Spinners come into play as the match progresses with the surface drying out. Batters enjoy the true nature of the pitch and could look to pass the milestones once they settle in. The outfield is lush and quick, meaning batters will get value for shots. South Africa beat India by four runs in the previous ODI at Newlands.
There is no chance of rain on matchday in Cape Town. Temperatures will be in the mid-20s degrees Celsius with a high level of humidity.
South Africa will be looking to bounce back after their poor performance in the first ODI. We think the batters will better this time around and should be able to even the series. Pakistan must hope for brilliance from one of its batters once more if it is to be competitive. On a man to man basis, we see South Africa as the superior outfit.
Bet on South Africa to win.
