Ayub should bat at three in the order again and, if Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam give him a solid foundation, he could put in a characteristic cameo. Ayub hit 31 in the previous match and averages 17 in T20I cricket, so you’d be backing him to do a bit better than his average here.
Van der Dussen opened the batting in the first T20I. This is not his usual position in this format and it didn’t work this time. Van der Dussen is a good bet to bounce back from that duck, though. Conditions in Centurion should suit his shot selection better than they did in Durban.
Once again, we can look forward to some world-class fast bowling in this match. With Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi in reasonable form and Anrich Nortje perhaps back from injury, this should be an entertaining spectacle at SuperSport Park. Look out for the performance of George Linde, too. He is one of the best spinning all-rounders in world cricket at the moment.
Pakistan had won three T20Is in a row against South Africa prior to this week’s 11-run win by the Proteas at Kingsmead. Before that, South Africa had not beaten Pakistan in this format since 2021.
South Africa and Pakistan will meet for the second T20I at SuperSport Park, Centurion on Friday, 13 December 2024. Live stream the match in India on the JioCinema app. The live television broadcast will be on Sports18.
The Proteas will insist on better from their top three batters, who shared a mere 18 runs last time out. Were it not for David Miller and Linde, the hosts would have been far worse off in Kingsmead. But it’s that middle-order firepower we have come to appreciate from South Africa, especially if Heinrich Klaasen fires.
Klaasen is captaining the team.
It will be interesting to see how the added responsibility of the leadership affects his primary role with the bat. Will it empower or limit? Time will tell. Klaasen has the opportunity to take his team to an unassailable series lead.
Whether Nortje returns to the XI remains in the balance. He is nursing a toe injury. If he does come back in, Kwena Maphaka will likely have to make way. Donovan Ferreira might find himself on the sidelines, too, if the home side decide to change the winning XI. Ferreira could be sacrificed for an additional bowler.
And certainly keep an eye on the performance of Linde. He was named player of the match in the previous fixture after hitting a near half-ton and taking four wickets. Linde has been missed in international cricket for several years, but now is his time to really shine.
Pakistan, much like the Proteas, will want better from most of their batters this time. There is occasionally an overreliance on Rizwan, which was again evident in the series opener. Azam, Ayub and others will need to step up strongly in support.
Shaheen Shah Afridi recently claimed his 100th wicket in T20I cricket. As one of the best left-arm fast bowlers around at the moment, his showing in Centurion will be key. Afridi can anticipate a hard pitch and conditions suitable for early seam movement.
But it’s not going to be all about pace. Pakistan might open the bowling with Abrar Ahmed again. He took three wickets in the previous match and has a lot of variety to flummox the opposition batters. His googly is especially effective. South Africa hardly picked it in Durban.
A win for Pakistan here would set up an intriguing decider. A loss would put them on the back foot heading into the upcoming ODI and Test series against South Africa. Importantly, they need to play as a cohesive unit rather than a selection of individuals.
This will be a day-night match. Teams generally prefer to chase rather than set totals during floodlit matches at Centurion. Expect the captain who wins the toss to choose to bowl first.
The pitch at SuperSport Park should be a hard surface with bounce and carry. Under the lights, the ball might skid onto the bat to allow for more free-flowing stroke play. The team batting first may be aiming for a score of 200 runs minimum in their 20 overs.
Centurion has a five percent chance of rain on Friday evening. The temperatures are expected to be hot and slightly humid, too.
South Africa took the win in Durban, but were not as dominant as they might have liked. Pakistan remained in the contest for an extended period, but ultimately couldn’t get over the line. These are two highly-competitive teams with some of the best T20I batters in the world – and classy fast bowling units. This match will be played at a high-scoring venue, where South Africa’s batters could take their cue to really put down the foot.
