Babar Azam has been one of the stars of Pakistani cricket for just under a decade. The master batter has more than 4000 T20I runs to his record with a batting average of almost double 20.5. His strike rate may be under question but his consistency is certainly in no doubt.
The South African captain is a power-hitter who is likely to walk in after the fielding restrictions in the first six overs are lifted. Klaasen has more than 30 half-centuries in T20s so this should be a safe bet.
South Africa and Pakistan have played in exciting matches against each other, particularly in the shorter formats. Both teams have their fast-bowling units as their biggest strength, but will also have some powerful T20I batters. They have almost won an equal number of games in South Africa when they have played against each other. This may be another thriller.
Before this T20I series started, the teams shared a tightly-contested record for games played in South Africa. Pakistan had won six games to South Africa’s five. The series is expected to be another hot contest. Pakistan have won both of the last two T20Is at Centurion in the last five years.
South Africa and Pakistan will meet for the second T20I at SuperSport Park, Centurion on Friday, 13 December 2024. In India, you will have the live-streaming option of the JioCinema app and the TV broadcast on the Sports 18 channels.
The opening duo of Reeza Hendricks and Ryan Rickelton sets a solid right-hand and left-hand foundation. They will aim to motor South Africa along in the first six overs. Hendricks piled on a T20I half-century against Ireland earlier this year.
Heading towards the middle-order, we’ll have a look at Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller. Each of them has been around international cricket for quite some time and will have a clear idea of how to play their role as either the aggressor or someone to bat around.
Van der Dussen showed his quality with a score of 52 runs in the fourth T20I of Pakistan’s previous tour to South Africa. Klaasen blasted a 28-ball 50 runs when Pakistan toured South Africa previously. Donovan Ferreira will add the finishing touches with the bat. George Linde is also capable of valuable lower-order runs, but will largely need to contain the Pakistani batters with his accurate left-arm spin.
Linde did exactly that against Pakistan at the Wanderers in 2021 with three wickets for 23 runs in four overs.
The bowling attack is spearheaded by pacer Anrich Nortje. If he can reach speeds that many around the world know he is capable of, he could be frightening to face. Ottneil Baartman is known for his execution under pressure.
The spin department will be controlled by one of the best T20 spinners in Tabraiz Shamsi. Andile Simelane is new to the scene, but has shown signs that he’s growing into an international-quality cricketer.
Usman Khan and Saim Ayub may open the batting. They will want to set the pace of the innings from the get-go. Both have played a fair amount of T20 cricket, but are relatively fresh to the international version of the format. This series could be a stepping stone for securing their spots in the national side.
The veteran duo of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan will follow. Babar Azam's presence offers reliability and class. The world-class batter was player-of-the-series with 210 runs in his previous T20I tour to South Africa.
That tour included a T20I century for him in Centurion. He is perfectly partnered with Mohammad Rizwan, the captain and wicketkeeper, with his gritty batting and smart cricketing brain. He hit an important 73 not out at SuperSport Park in the third T20I of his previous tour to South Africa. He also hit a score of 74 runs not out to open that T20I series.
Tayyab Tahir and Irfan Khan provide firepower in the middle-order. Salman Agha is a useful finisher in the batting innings and can bowl handy off-spin overs.
The bowling attack is spearheaded by left-armer Shaheen Shah Afridi. He is particularly threatening with the swinging new ball. Haris Rauf brings express pace and fearsome bounce. Rauf took two wickets when he last played at Centurion in a T20I.
The spin department is handled by Abrar Ahmed, who will want to be economical and a wicket-taking threat. Abbas Afridi adds depth to the pace battery with the ability to bowl in any phase of the game. The pacer took bowling figures of three for 24 in four overs in the third T20I against Zimbabwe.
This T20I is scheduled to be played as a night game at Centurion. Teams generally prefer to chase under the floodlights. Heinrich Klaasen and Mohammad Rizwan may opt to bowl first with their strong pace attacks and finish off the job with their big hitters.
The pitch at SuperSport Park should be a hard surface with bounce and carry. Under the lights, the ball might skid onto the bat to allow for more free-flowing strokeplay. The seam bowlers might get some initial movement with the new ball in the powerplay, but this should be a batter’s paradise. The team batting first may be aiming for a score of 200 runs minimum in their 20 overs.
Centurion has a five percent chance of rain on Friday evening. The temperatures are expected to be extremely hot and slightly humid too. There may be a slight gust of wind too.
T20 matches in South Africa are usually high-scoring with the power hitters being the most important part of a team. That is where South Africa has a huge advantage. We also think the strong middle-order of South Africa gives it flexibility and the ability to target the admittedly impressive Pakistani bowling unit.
Bet on South Africa to win.
