None of the last 5 games played at this venue have seen 16 or more wickets. As both teams, especially Australia, have a strong batting unit, we are expecting a similar outcome here.
The pitch at the MCG is balanced and the bowlers, especially the quicker bowlers, will be able to keep a tight leash over the batsmen. We are therefore unlikely to see a high-scoring over.
Australia to win the match 1.18
Pakistan is touring Australia for a white-ball series next week. The two teams will face off in a 3-match ODI series followed by 3 T20 internationals. The first match will be played on Monday at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The two teams have faced each other in 108 matches to date. Australia won 70 games while Pakistan won 34. 3 games ended without a result, while 1 game ended in a tie.
This match will be live-streamed on the Disney+ Hotstar App. One can also watch this match live on the Star Sports Network.
Australia has rested quite a few of its senior players for this tour and has given the youngsters a chance to prove themselves ahead of the all-important Champions Trophy scheduled next year.
Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh are on paternity leave, which means Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matthew Short are likely to open the batting here. Steve Smith is expected to retain his place in the number-3 slot, while Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis are likely to add heft to the middle order.
Australia also has the option of picking Aaron Hardie as the 3rd all-rounder. This match is also likely to see the return of Pat Cummins, who led the team in their victorious World Cup campaign last year. Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc will join him in the pace department.
Adam Zampa also finds a place in the 14-member squad.
Pakistan is coming into this tour on the back of a stunning comeback against England in the 3-Test series. While there were quite a few controversies surrounding the team off the field, it didn’t seem to affect the team’s performance.
With Babar Azam resigning from the post of captain, Mohammad Rizwan will lead the team in this series. He is a dependable performer in the middle overs and can also play the role of a finisher. There are as many as 6 uncapped players selected for this series, including Saim Ayub, Aamir Jamal, Faisal Akram, Arafat Minhas, Haseebullah, and Muhammad Irfan Khan.
Mohammad Hasnain, who put up an excellent performance in the Champions One Day Cup will join ranks with Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf.
However, the team will have to depend on the all-rounders to bowl during the middle overs.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first.
The pitch at the MCG is well-balanced, providing equal opportunities to the batsmen and bowlers. The surface offers good pace and bounce, and the new ball will seam around and there is also some swing on offer. However, things get easier for the batsmen as the game progresses.
The average first-inning score here is around 220.
Anything over 280 could be tricky to chase at this venue. The weather is likely to be overcast with temperatures of under 20 degrees.
While Pakistan has played well in the recent Test series, they have a lot of new players selected for this series. Australia is undoubtedly a stronger team and playing under home conditions, it will be very difficult to beat them.
