Although the Sri Lankans have shown the better batting performances overall, New Zealand have scored more runs than their opposition in both opening powerplays of the ODI series. The Black Caps may do so for the third time this series.
This is highly likely if we look at the trend of the previous ODI. Both teams started off their first over with a dot ball. Between both opening overs, there were as many as ten dots. This bet is a highly probable outcome.
The Sri Lankans have shown their proficiency in home conditions after securing two wins this ODI series. Despite a loss in the second ODI, the Black Caps will be proud of their fightback this series and taking their hosts all the way to the penultimate over of the game. Kusal Mendis has been their rock-solid option in the batting order over the two games. A few contributions around him in the batting lineup would be useful to produce another dominant batting display. New Zealand will still be looking at their batting as a weakness.
Sri Lanka are steadily improving their record against the New Zealanders after another back-to-back win, which in, turn means they have at least wrapped up this ODI series. Those two wins for Sri Lanka are their only two in the last five games between the sides. New Zealand have won all three of the others.
This is the third and final ODI of the series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand on Tuesday, 19 November 2024. Indian fans can follow the match on the live stream courtesy of the FanCode app.
The Sri Lankan ODI team are on the cusp of a remarkable three-nil clean sweep at home. Under Charith Asalanka's leadership, the Sri Lankan ODI team is poised to make a significant result in this series.
The top order is spearheaded by the aggressive Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando. Kusal Mendis, donning the wicketkeeping gloves, brings a reassuring presence to the top-order. He played a composed knock of 74 runs not out to guide the team home in their last match.
Kamindu Mendis and Charith Asalanka, the captain, will follow him and bring firepower in the middle overs. Sadeera Samarawickrama and Janith Liyanage add depth to the quality batting lineup.
The bowling attack is equally impressive and arguably more consistent. Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana and Jeffrey Vandersay all add variety to the spin attack with left-arm orthodox spin, right-arm off-spin and right-arm leg-spin.
Theekshana and Vandersay took three wickets apiece in the second ODI. Asitha Fernando's pace and seam bowling could threaten in damp conditions. Fernando bagged two wickets in the previous game.
New Zealand is usually characterised by their ability as a unit rather than a team of individually brilliant players. They will need to find their magic again to avoid a whitewash this ODI series. They have lacked the ability to effectively adapt to subcontinental conditions.
Will Young and Tim Robinson provide a solid opening batting foundation. Henry Nicholls and Mark Chapman will complement them with a balance of stability and aggression. Chapman top-scored with 76 runs off 81 balls previously.
Glenn Phillips is an explosive batter. Mitchell Hay is the wicketkeeper and although still new to international cricket has shown promise with 49 runs in his previous knock. Michael Bracewell's all-round abilities and Mitchell Santner's captaincy bring batting and bowling depth to the team.
The bowling attack is spearheaded by Nathan Smith's pace and Jacob Duffy's swing. Ish Sodhi's leg-spin, Mitchell Santner's left-arm spin and Michael Bracewell’s right-arm leg-spin offer a varied and threatening spin trio. Santner was economical in the second ODI to back up a bowling performance of four for 36 in ten overs from Bracewell.
Santner's leadership and experience will be crucial in guiding the team through challenging situations. The team have shown signs of improvement though.
Both teams could be in favour of bowling first to utilise the damp conditions before and potentially during the match. Both groups of seamers will want to exploit the seaming new ball in the opening powerplay if given the chance to bowl first.
The pitch will largely have been under covers in the days leading up the final ODI because of scattered showers and thunderstorms. You can expect the seamers to have this at their advantage with early seam movement. Scores were lower in Pallekele with both teams scoring just over 200 runs. The first hour of each innings could be tricky. Both teams will need batters to apply themselves to make the most of better conditions later in the innings.
The weather at Pallekele looks ominous. Rain is expected on matchday at a 56 percent chance at the start time of the match. Most of the rain is predicted to centred around the period before and during the first innings. Temperatures will be scorching and humid.
Kusal Mendis has been the batter of the series for Sri Lanka. Avishka Fernando scored a century alongside him in the opening ODI. The Sri Lankans may be looking to improve their team’s ability to bat as a unit rather than relying on individuals. Their bowling has been consistent.
New Zealand’s bowling has improved from game one to two. Their biggest concern will be their lack of adaptability to the batting conditions. Sri Lanka will be aiming for a clean sweep this ODI series.
