Both teams have displayed caution during the initial stages of their previous matches. With the emphasis on building partnerships early in an international setup, a low scoring first over is a probable outcome.
Both Bangladesh Women and Ireland Women have demonstrated steady starts in their recent games, often preferring to settle in during the opening over. A dot ball to start the game seems highly likely.
Both teams will be eager to get going again in the 50-over format after a lengthy break. Bangladesh Women last played a Women’s ODI in March and Ireland Women last played in September. Neither side has produced particularly great form leading up to this series so a win will be much welcomed. Bangladesh Women will be the more comfortable of the two teams because of the opportunity to play on home soil again.
The last time the teams met was as far back as February 2017. Numerous changes would be found in both squads and the coaching staff since they last met seven years ago. Only two of their last five Women’s ODIs reached a conclusion. Both of those results were Bangladesh wins.
This is the first Women’s ODI between Bangladesh Women and Ireland Women as part of their three-match Women’s ODI series. The game will take place at Shere Bangla National Stadium on Wednesday, 27 November 2024 and can be followed by Indian fans on the FanCode app.
The Bangladesh Women’s cricket team will be under the experienced leadership of Nigar Sultana Joty Nigar, known for her calm demeanour may lead a team ready to put up a strong home performance. She hit an innings of 27 runs against the Australian ladies in March this year.
Fargana Hoque and Sharmin Akhter form a solid opening partnership. Young Sobhana Mostary will be the cornerstone of the top-order.
The all-round abilities of Ritu Moni provide balance to the squad. Bangladesh’s spin-heavy strategy will be driven by the left-arm brilliance of Nahida Akter and Fahima Khatun, whose leg spin is a potent weapon in the middle overs.
Together, they form a formidable spin attack well-suited to exploit Bangladeshi conditions. Akter grabbed two wickets against Australia Women in the opening Women’s ODI of their home tour against the Aussies.
The pace department is led by the veteran Jahanara Alam. Young sensation Marufa Akter brings energy and promise to the fast-bowling unit, complementing Jahanara’s skills.
The talented Gaby Lewis will lead an Irish side with a blend of youth and experience. Gaby Lewis is an exceptional top-order batter herself. The captain blasted a quickfire 72 runs off 56 balls to guide her side to a win against England Women in her last Women’s ODI.
Partnering her at the top will be Amy Hunter, a promising wicketkeeper-batter known for her composure and ability to rotate the strike. Both players form a solid opening foundation. All-rounders Orla Prendergast and Leah Paul continue the batting assault in the middle-order.
Laura Delany will be one of Ireland’s most experienced players. As a dependable all-rounder, she will be the glue that binds the team together. Arlene Kelly is another dynamic all-rounder who will display batting and bowling prowess. Kelly has 18 wickets across her last eight Women’s ODIs. Alice Tector will add to the core of all-rounders in the side.
Young pacers Ava Canning and Jane Maguire are both capable of generating pace and troubling batters. The two seamers will work in tandem with the spin of Cara Murray, who offers control and wicket-taking ability in the middle overs. She has 13 wickets in her last four Women’s ODI matches.
Adding variety to the bowling unit is spinner Freya Sargent. She could be particularly important on this pitch. She has form from picking up two wickets against England Women in the third Women’s ODI.
Both sides may be comfortable with putting on the pressure with runs in the first innings. The pitch will be at its best to bat on in the first innings. Bangladesh could be dangerous if they can make best use of spinning conditions in the second innings.
The pitch at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur typically starts balanced but becomes lower and slower as the game progresses. Batters will find it easier to score in the first 20 to 25 overs with the newer ball, but may be more of a challenge later with the sluggish surface. Spinners and medium pacers with variations will be most effective. The teams may be aiming for a competitive total of 220 to 250 runs.
This first ODI is unlikely to be affected by rain with only a three percent chance of rain. The players can expect warm and sunny weather, with it also being slightly humid.
Bangladesh Women and Ireland Women will be looking forward to testing themselves in the 50-over format again after a length delay between matches. The home side will be a challenge to beat in the comfort of their home conditions. Their spinners may be effective on this pitch. The tourists have shown their growth in world cricket, particularly after they managed an historic win against the English on their home turf. They are lacking experience on the subcontinent though.
