Both, Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma are in good form with the bat. They are the second-most successful pair of the season, scoring 308 runs at an average of 51.00. They have 3 partnerships of 50+ runs and a century stand in the last 6 innings. On the other hand, Punjab Kings are likely to struggle without Shikhar Dhawan.
Jasprit Bumrah has bowled well this season to pick up 10 wickets in 6 matches. As the pitch at Mullanpur does help the seamers, especially new-ball bowlers, Bumrah has a good chance of bowling yet another good spell.
Both, the Mumbai Indians as well as the Punjab Kings will be looking to get back to winning ways as they face off against each other on Thursday. The match will be played at the Mullanpur Stadium in Chandigarh.
Both teams have faced each other in 31 matches thus far. The Mumbai Indians have a slight edge with 16 wins, while Punjab Kings have won 15.
This match can be live-streamed on the Jio Cinema App or can be watched live on the Star Sports Network.
With just 1 win in the last 5 matches, the Punjab Kings are struggling at the moment and will need to turn things around soon.
The batting for the Punjab Kings has been rather inconsistent this season and it has been further undone by the absence of Shikhar Dhawan, who is set to be out for a week due to a shoulder injury. This puts added pressure on the likes of Johnny Bairstow and Prabhsimran Singh, who are the key batsmen in the top order.
The team will also rely heavily on domestic talent including Jitesh Sharma, Atharva Taide, and Shashank Singh to deliver the goods. The latter has played a couple of impressive knocks and will look to plate the role of a finisher along with Ashutosh Sharma.
Coming to the bowling, Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh make up for a potent new-ball attack and have picked up 9 wickets each. Harshal Patel and Sam Curran have 15 wickets between them but have often been expensive.
Also, the Punjab Kings lack a quality spinner.
Without Shikhar Dhawan available in the top order, another batter needs to step up and currently, there seems to be no one to do so. We think a change in selection or a change in batting order (Maybe Sam Curran comes up the order) is likely for this contest.
After winning back-to-back matches, the Mumbai Indians slipped to a loss against arch-rivals, the Chennai Super Kings, on Sunday. This marked the team’s 4th loss of the season.
While the opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan has been pretty consistent in the last 3 games, the middle order has often failed to capitalize on the good starts, as it did in the last match. MI's last three opening partnerships have been 70, 101, and 80.
This is a great sign for the batting unit and bodes well for this match as well. Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma are both quality players and in good form. With these two in the middle, and players like TIm David or Romario Shepherd to follow, runs should not be an issure for the Mumbai Indians in most matches.
In fact, the only batter that seems out of form and weighing the team down is Hardik Pandya.
The seamers have done a good job in IPL 2024. Jasprit Bumrah is the leading wicket-taker for the team with 10 wickets and has been well supported by Gerald Coetzee and Akash Madhwal. The issue with the latter two bowlers has been their high economy-rate which is 10.26 for Coetzee and 10.60 for Madhwal.
Where the team lacks is a consistent spin bowler as well as a genuine 5th bowler who can dry up the runs and build up pressure on the opposition's batting. Hardik Pandya used to be able to do this job but he is going at 12 runs an over and has picked just three wickets so far.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first. The sample size is small but two out of the three matches at Mullanpur have been won by the team chasing.
The pitch at Mullanpur generally holds some moisture and there will be some patches of green grass dotting the surface. The seamers will get some movement early on in the match. However, things should improve for the batsmen as the match progresses. A score of 168 is the average score batting first while 182 is the average winning score batting first on this ground.
Dew is likely to come in during the second half. The weather is likely to be cloudy with temperatures of between 25 and 30 degrees.
There is plenty of scope for improvement when it comes to the performance of both teams. While we expect a close contest, we feel that the Mumbai Indians have an edge thanks to a stronger batting unit. Teams have been using their impact players very well and with the onus on getting big runs, the loss of Shikhar Dhawan might cost PBKS heavily.
