Since this is the first time that most players will be batting on this pitch, there will be a degree of uncertainty for them. Also, the surface does help the bowlers, especially the spinners, who bowl a good line and length. We are therefore expecting quite a few wickets to fall.
Delhi is expected to open with David Warner and Prithvi Shaw. The duo has plenty of experience playing in the IPL and has given the team some good starts in the past. On the other hand, Shikhar Dhawan hasn’t played much cricket of late and might be a bit rusty.
As mentioned earlier, the pitch at Mullanpur provides plenty of opportunities for the batsmen to score. The recent SMAT matches played on this ground have seen some big individual scores and that is likely to be the case for this match too.
Amid much fanfare, the 17th edition of the hugely popular Indian Premier League is set to begin this month. The Punjab Kings will kick off their campaign by hosting neighbors Delhi Capitals at the brand-new Yadavindra Singh Stadium in Mullanpur.
It is an even record between the two teams so far, with both of them winning 16 matches each.
This match can be live-streamed on the Jio Cinema App or can be watched live on the Sports 18 Network.
Arguably one of the most underperforming sides in the history of the IPL, the Punjab Kings will look to break the jinx this season and hope to put up a better show.
Shikhar Dhawan will lead a side that boasts plenty of firepower in the batting line-up. Prabhsimran Singh played a couple of excellent innings last season and will likely retain his place at the top of the order. We are not sure if he is really a player that will end up becomign a T20 great, though.
There is a good mix of domestic and international stars in the middle order. These include Jitesh Sharma, Atharva Taide, Rilee Rossouw, and Johnny Bairstow. There are also some quality all-rounders on the squad in the form of Liam Livingstone, Sikandar Raza, and Sam Curran.
Plenty of power but PBKS tends to start slowly and underutilizes the power it has in the middle.
Arshdeep Singh is likely to lead the attack with the new ball alongside Kagiso Rabada and the inclusion of Harshal Patel only strengthens the seam attack. The spin might just prove to be the Achilles heel for the team. Rahul Chahar didn’t have the best season last year and the team will have to depend on the all-rounders to deliver.
After a couple of disappointing seasons, the Delhi Capitals will look to make a positive start to their fresh campaign.
The biggest boost for the team will undoubtedly be the return of skipper Rishabh Pant, who is likely to take the field after a gap of almost 14 months. He will join ranks with two other hard-hitting wicket-keeper batsmen, Shai Hope and Tristan Stubbs.
Prithvi Shaw and David Warner make up for an explosive opening pair, while domestic talents Yash Dhull and Ricky Bhui add heft to the middle order. Harry Brook, who was brought in from the Sunrisers, has decided to withdraw from the series and Australian youngster Jake Fraser-McGurk has been named as his replacement.
Mitchell Marsh and Axar Patel are two quality all-rounders on the team who bring depth to the batting.
The unavailability of Lungi Ngidi due to an injury leaves a glaring hole in the pace department as Ishant Sharma and Khaleel Ahmed haven’t played much cricket in recent weeks. The spin unit is better thanks to Axar and Kuldeep Yadav.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first.
Since this is the first IPL match that will be played on this ground, not much is known about how the surface will behave. However, the few domestic fixtures that have been played here have seen an average first-inning score of 170, indicative of a good batting track.
The quicker bowlers will have to work hard to earn their wickets as the surface is likely to be flat with little grass.
The spinners can expect some help during the second half.
The Punjab Kings and the Delhi Capitals have often put up underwhelming shows and we hope that this will not be the case in this match. We are going to back the Delhi Capitals to win this match thanks to a stronger and deeper batting line-up, which is likely to be a big advantage on this ground.
Bet on the Delhi Capitals to win.
