The pitch at the Chepauk Stadium allows the batsmen to free their arms and play the big shots. As both teams are likely to feature some clean strikers of the ball, we can expect at least a couple of big overs.
Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis were the most consistent opening pair last season as they together scored 939 at an average of 67.07. The CSK opening pair performed well too, but with Devon Conway missing from action, it is an advantage for RCB in this bet.
With the likes of Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, and Rachin Ravindra likely to feature in this match, there is no doubt that at least one of them will go on to make a big score.
The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League is set to kick off on 22nd March. The season opener will feature the Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore who will play at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Both teams have faced each other in 31 matches to date. The Chennai Super Kings are the dominant side with 21 wins, while the Royal Challengers Bangalore have won 10.
This match can be live-streamed on the Jio Cinema App or can be watched live on the Star Sports Network.
The Chennai Super Kings are one of the most successful franchises in the history of the league and are also the defending champions for this season.
The Super Kings have retained much of its core squad from last season, something which has become a hallmark of their functioning. MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, and Ajinkya Rahane are all set to reprise their roles in the batting line-up. The team received a bit of upsetting news before the start of the season as Devon Conway, who was the leading run-scorer for the team last season, pulled out of the first half due to an injury.
Thankfully, the team has brought in a couple of big international stars in the form of Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell who can fill in for him. Another big addition is that of Sameer Rizvi, who could feature in the middle order.
CSK boasts of a strong pace unit thanks to the presence of Tushar Deshpande, Matheesha Pathirana, Mustafizur Rahman, Shardul Thakur, and Deepak Chahar.
The spin attack will feature Maheesh Theekshana, Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mitchell Santner.
*Update: Dhoni has announced that he will not be captain for CSK from this season and that Ruturaj Gaikwad will take over.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore will once again begin their quest for the elusive IPL title as they take on the mighty CSK. With a strong batting unit, RCB will look to score plenty of runs.
With Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis coming in at the top of the order, the Royal Challengers have the most electric opening pair in the league. As was the case last season, the team will want the duo to give them a strong start. The middle order consists of Dinesh Kartik and Rajat Patidar.
The Australian duo of Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green is not only capable of scoring big runs but also provides an extra option when it comes to bowling. Talking about the bowling, it could be a potential weakness for the visitors.
They have let go of some of their best bowlers like Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel, and Josh Hazlewood.
However, they don’t seem to have done enough to replace them. Mohammed Siraj will lead the pace attack but he tends to leak runs. Similarly, the likes of Alzarri Joseph, Lockie Ferguson, and Tom Curran, while being good bowlers, can be expensive at times.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bat first. 5 out of the previous 10 matches at the venue have been won by the team that has batted first.
The pitch at Chennai is generally good to bat on and we can expect a similar surface for this match. The ball comes nicely onto the bat and the batsmen can play their shots with ease. That said, the quicker bowlers can expect some help from the new ball, while the spinners will come into action during the second half.
A score of around 180 is a par score on this ground (183 is the average winning score batting first). The weather in Chennai will be warm and humid, with temperatures of around 30 degrees.
Both the teams will be looking to make a positive start to their campaign and we can expect a cracking contest. Nevertheless, we feel that the Chennai Super Kings are the favorites to win thanks to their stronger bowling setup.
