KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal aren’t consistent as an opening pair and barring a double-century stand in the second inning of the first match, they haven’t crossed the 15-run mark. As they face a strong pace attack on a fast pitch, we expect their struggles to continue.
Travis Head has an excellent record against India and has scored 955 runs at an average of 47.75 against them. He has scored 31 or more runs in 6 of his last 8 innings against them, including 2 centuries and 2 half-centuries. We are therefore backing him to play a good knock.
With the 5-match series evenly balanced, Australia will take on India in the 3rd Test match starting on Sunday. The two teams will clash at The Gabba in Brisbane.
The two teams have faced each other in 109 matches to date. Australia won 46 while India won 33. 29 matches ended in a draw while one was a tie.
This match will be live-streamed on the Disney+ Hotstar App. One can also watch it live on the Star Sports Network.
After losing the first test match, Australia bounced back smartly at Adelaide to secure a thumping victory and level the series. They will now look to get a lead by winning here in Brisbane.
Travis Head continues with his brilliant record against India as he scored his 2nd century against them. He has scored 955 runs against India, which is his best performance against any nation. Marnus Labuschagne scored a half-century as well, and his partnership with Head played a pivotal role in Australia’s win.
However, the form of Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja remains a bit of concern for the hosts. Nevertheless, there is plenty of firepower in the batting unit thanks to the presence of Mitchell Marsh, Nathan McSweeney, and Alex Carey.
Here is the thing, we don't think Australia's batting was really tested in the second Test Match. The batters were never under any serious pressure and although Bumrah asked some tough questions, the brilliance of Travis Head covered for a lot of shortcomings.
Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins bowled brilliantly in the previous match and will once again lead the pace attack. Scott Boland picked up 5 wickets in the match and could retain his place in the playing XI. There is some news that Josh Hazelwood will retake his place in the eleven but his fitness is not yet guaranteed.
India had a forgettable outing in Adelaide as they squandered away an early advantage. There is little time to turn things around for them and they will need to come back with a positive frame of mind.
The batting has proved to be India’s biggest weakness in recent months. Retaining KL Rahul at the top of the order didn’t yield the desired result as India couldn’t get a good start in either innings. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who are the most experienced batsmen in the squad, have been going through a rough patch and that has had a huge impact on the team’s fortunes.
If India wants to win this match, they will need at least one of them to get going. Shubman Gill has also been unable to convert his start into a big knock. Nitish Reddy is proving to be a reliable performer in the lower middle order and he top-scored for the team in both the innings.
The young brigade of Jaiswal, Pant, and Gill seem to be the one that are expected to fight fire with fire in this series.
The bowling is overly dependent on Jasprit Bumrah. He is the leading wicket-taker for the series with 12 wickets. However, he will need better support from Mohammed Siraj. Harshit Rana could be benched to make way for Akash Deep. India's spin option in both Tests so far has been ineffective and we could see Ravindra Jadeja make a comeback into the lineup.
That will also add a few more runs to the lower order.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first. While the conditions are tough to start out, we have seen in the previous few matches at the venue that batting starts to get easier as the days progress.
The Gabba provides a flat and hard surface. The pitch is true, offering excellent pace and bounce, and the bowlers will get plenty of movement with the new ball. That said, the batsmen will be able to play their shots confidently. The average first-inning score here is around 336. The weather in Brisbane is likely to be cloudy and there may be some rain on the second and third day.
The pitch at the Gabba is expected to help the seamers and at the moment, Australia seems to be better equipped to exploit the conditions. They have a strong and well-balanced pace attack and some of its key batsmen are in good form as well.
