India To Win, 1.60
India has won each of their last 6 matches at the Eden Gardens
India is on an 8-match winning streak in the T20s
England lacks depth in its batting and is missing some key players
Sanju Samson was India’s leading run-scorer in the T20 format in 2024. He has scored 436 runs in his last 12 innings at an average of 43.60. He has scored at least 25 runs in 4 of his last 7 innings, including 3 centuries and we are backing him to play a good knock.
The pitch at the Eden Gardens is good to bat on and there are plenty of opportunities for the batsmen to score runs. The outfield here is quick too, and we are therefore expecting at least one big over.
The English Cricket Team will embark on a 20-day white-ball tour of India starting this week where the two teams will play a 5-match T20I series followed by a 3-match ODI series. The first T20 will be played on Wednesday at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
The two teams have played 24 matches against each other. India has won 13 while England has won 11. Interestingly, 11 of the T20 matches have been played in India where the home team holds a slim 6-5 advantage. Overall, five out of the most recent seven T20 matches between India and England have been won by India.
This match can be watched live on Disney+ Hotstar App and Star Sports Network.
While India’s record in the red-ball format hasn’t been the best in the last couple of months, they have fared better in the white-ball format. India is the top-ranked team in the ODIs and T20s and will look to continue doing well as the preparations for the Champions Trophy enter their final stages.
As has been the case over the last couple of seasons, India has picked a relatively young squad for the T20 format under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav. The biggest news for the team is the availability of Mohammed Shami, who is coming back to the international arena after more than a year.
In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Shami remains the team’s go-to seamer and will be supported by Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Hardik Pandya. Axar Patel has been named the vice-captain of the squad for this series and will lead the spin department along with Ravi Bishnoi and Varun Chakravarthy.
Sanju Samson is likely to be the first-choice wicket-keeper and could open the batting alongside Abhishek Sharma. Tilak Varma and Rinku Singh are also likely to get a spot in the playing XI.
India's strength in recent T20 matches has been its explosive batting. Players like Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Rinku Singh add explosive hitting ability right across the lineup. All-rounders like Axar Patel and Nitish Kumar Reddy also add depth to the lineup.
India may be a young side but it is very talented and is coming into this match on the back of a record-breaking run in T20 cricket.
The last time England played in the shortest format was back in November when they defeated the West Indies in their backyard. England has retained most of the players from that squad and has gone for a mix of youth and experience.
Jos Buttler will lead a strong batting line-up that has plenty of explosive batsmen. Buttler will likely open the batting along with Phil Salt. Harry Brook, who was in scintillating form during the recent Test series against New Zealand, makes a comeback to the T20 squad and will add heft to the middle order.
He will have the support of Ben Duckett and all-rounders Liam Livingstone and Jacob Bethell.
The visitors have bet heavily on a strong pace attack that will be headlined by Gus Atkinson, Jofra Archer, and Jamie Overton.
Saqib Mahmood, Brydon Carse, and Mark Wood are all in the squad as well. The spin department consists of Adil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to field first. The small boundaries of the Eden Gardens can be very hard to defend. With both teams featuring strong batting lineups, we think chasing will be the preferred option for the captain that wins the toss.
The Eden Gardens is one of the more batting-friendly venues in India. The surface is flat and hard, and the ball comes onto the bat, allowing the batsmen to play their shots. The team batting first will look to score anywhere between 180 to 200 runs.
The pitch gets a little slower as the match progresses and the spinners will get some help. Dew can also play a major role, in which case the chasing team will have a definite advantage.
The weather will be clear with pleasant temperatures.
India and England are among the strongest teams in the T20 format and we are expecting a close contest between them. Looking at their in-paper strengths and weaknesses, we feel that India has a slight edge here thanks to a stronger batting line-up and a well-balanced bowling attack. The fact that they are playing in home conditions also gives them an advantage.
Bet on India to win.
