England lacks a strong spin attack
India has won 4 of its last 6 matches here
England has lost 4 of its last 5 ODIs against India
Virat Kohli is one of India’s most consistent batsmen in the ODI format. He has scored at least 37 runs in 5 of his last 8 innings, including 2 centuries and 3 half-centuries. He has an average of 44.88 against England and has scored 6 half-centuries in his last 11 innings against them. We are therefore backing him to play a big knock.
India has a formidable batting unit with some clean strikers of the ball. The pitch in Nagpur is good to bat on and England’s bowling doesn’t seem to be the strongest. We are therefore expecting at least one big over during India’s innings.
After a thumping victory over England in the T20 series, India will take them on for a 3-match ODI series starting on Thursday. The first match will be played at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur.
The two teams have faced each other in 107 matches. India won 58 while England managed to win 44. Three games ended without any result while two ended in a tie.
This match can be watched live on Disney+ Hotstar App and Star Sports Network.
India has picked up a 14-member squad for the first two matches of this ODI series. The last ODI will see a couple of changes, and that will be the provisional squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy as well.
Rohit Sharma will once again be in charge of the team. Despite a difficult few months, the team management has reposed its faith in the veteran opener. Yashasvi Jaiswal is in the side and while we hope that he gets a chance, he may have to wait because both Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are in the squad.
There are no major surprises in the middle order as Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Rishab Pant have all retained their places. Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel are the 3 all-rounders who will give the team some flexibility to adapt to different conditions.
The biggest change comes in the bowling department. Jasprit Bumrah will be rested for the first two matches and will be replaced by Harshit Rana, who made a terrific white-ball debut against England in the T20 series. Mohammed Siraj missed out and has been replaced by Arshdeep Singh, who was excellent in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Mohammed Shami is likely to play his first ODI after more than a year, while Kuldeep Yadav is the specialist spinner.

This series will serve as the warmup to the Champions Trophy starting in about two weeks. India will hope that its senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohammad Shami can find some much needed form. India is the clear favorite but it has a few headaches to take care of.
England will be very disappointed with the way it played in the T20 series. However, they will need to be positive as a new series starts and the team begins its preparations for the all-important Champions Trophy.
Most of the players who featured in the T20 format have been rolled over to the ODI series as well, with one exception. Rehan Ahmed has been left out and has been replaced by Joe Root. The inclusion of Root strengthens an already hefty batting line-up. Root has been scoring runs by the bucket in the SA20 and comes into this series with a lot of confidence.
Phil Salt and Ben Duckett will look to give the team a strong start, while Jos Buttler and Harry Brook will come in lower down. The team has two quality all-rounders, Liam Livingstone, and Jacob Bethell, to give them depth as well.
While Livingstone has plenty of experience playing in India, Bethell hasn’t played much in the subcontinent.
One potential weakness for the visiting team is that they have only one quality spinner, Adil Rashid. On the other hand, there are plenty of options when it comes to pace with bowlers like Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, Brydon Carse, Jamie Overton, and Gus Atkinson.
England is going to be led by Brendon McCullum and we know he is going to make the team play aggressive cricket. That is where we think England could end up surprising India. If England is able to take the game to India with the bat, you could see a couple of upsets in this series.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first.
The pitch at Nagpur is balanced, offering something for everyone. The new ball offers plenty of seam movement and there will be some swing as well. However, once the batsmen settle down, playing shots will get easier. The average first-inning score here is around 290 runs. The pitch evens out as the match progresses and the spinners will get some grip and turn as the ball gets a bit older.
The weather will remain clear with temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees.
All the betting sites are pricing in India as the heavy favorite to win. The odds are a bit shorter than what we would like but there is no doubt that India is the more likely team to win. England has struggled against spin and someone like Kuldeep Yadav could have a big impact. In fact, India's spinners versus England's batters will be the decisive battle.
All things considered, India is still the team to back.
Bet on India to win.
