Highest opening partnership: England
England is likely to begin with its trusted pair of Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. They have an average of 42.71 as an opening pair and are coming here on the back of a double-century stand against Zimbabwe. They have scored at least 47 runs as a pair in each of the 5 first innings they have played as a pair against India, including 4 stands of 50+ runs. We are therefore backing them to put up a bigger partnership.
Joe Root to score Over 35.5 runs in 1st innings
Joe Root has been in excellent form over the last few months. He has two scores of 50+ runs against India in his last 4 innings, including a century. Seeing his good form, we are expecting a big knock from him in this match.

England has been holding the trophy ever since 2011 (The return series in India is named differently) and will be in no mood to let it go. They are coming into this match on the back of a clinical win against Zimbabwe in a one-off Test match and will be feeling pretty confident.
England has a problem of plenty, especially when it comes to selecting the top-order batting. Jacob Bethell, who has been in excellent form in the limited-overs format, has earned a callback to the test squad. The last time he played an international test match was back in December, against New Zealand, where he made an impressive debut, scoring 3 half-centuries.
However, with both, Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope scoring centuries against Zimbabwe, Bethell is unlikely to get a chance here.
Ben Duckett will reprise his role as an opener along with Crawley. The middle order looks pretty solid as well, with Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Ben Stokes, all being in good form. With Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson both unavailable for this match, England’s pace attack does seem a bit inexperienced.
Jamie Overton earns a recall and is likely to be named in the playing XI along with Brydon Carse and Chris Woakes.

India’s performance in England, especially in the red-ball format, hasn’t been the best as they have failed to win a series here for more than a decade. While they did manage to draw level the previous edition, they will be eager to bring back the coveted silverware home this time around.
A lot has changed since these two teams last met over a year ago. Three of India’s most experienced Test players, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Rohit Sharma, have retired, handing over the reins to a relatively young squad.
Shubman Gill takes over the mantle of the team and will hope to make a positive start to his new journey. His form as the captain of Gujarat Titans during the recently concluded IPL will be a big positive for him as he opens the batting alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Karun Nair, who comes back on the international arena after 8 long years, has been in red-hot form in the domestic circuit and will most likely feature in the middle order along with Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul. Sai Sudharsan, who has been handed his debut, was the leading run-scorer in the latest edition of the IPL and could also play here.
The lower order could feature two all-rounders. While Jadeja is certain, the team selection will need to choose between Shardul Thakur and Nitish Reddy. The team management had announced that Bumrah may not play all the matches on this tour and it remains to be seen if he is selected here. His absence could give Arshdeep Singh to make his test debut.
UPDATE: Rishab Pant has confirmed that he will bat at number 5 and that Shubman Gill will bat at number 4.

In half of the last 10 matches played here, the team winning the toss opted to field first while in the other half, they opted to bat first. However, in each of the last 6 games, the team batting first has lost the match. We therefore think that bowling first might be a better option.
The pitch at Headingley is likely to be balanced. The pitch has been watered a lot over the last week and we are likely to see some green grass as well as some moisture under the surface for the first couple of days.
The seamers will get plenty of help if they bowl the right line and length. A score of 300 can be considered a good score for the 1st inning. The pitch is likely to get better to bat on during the 3rd and 4th days, with spinners getting help on the last day.
The weather in Headingley is likely to be warm and humid, with temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees. While there are likely to be some clouds, there is no rain expected till Tuesday.
UPDATE: Graham Gooch has said that the unusually hot weather could mean pitches that are drier than usual, opening the door for India to play two spinner.
The England-India Test series, particularly the ones played in England, are among the most awaited rivalries in Test cricket and we are expecting an exciting contest. While the final playing XI is yet to be announced, looking at the on-paper strengths and weaknesses, we feel that England has an edge here.
They have a strong and experienced batting line-up and have a seam department that is well-versed with the conditions.
