Upul Tharanga and Kumar Sangakkara have been pretty consistent at the top of the order. On the other hand, England’s highest opening partnership in the 3 matches they have played is 14. We are therefore backing Sri Lanka to put up a bigger opening stand.
Eoin Morgan’s recent form in the T20 format hasn’t been the best. He has crossed the 23-run mark only once in his last 9 innings. As he bats on a tricky surface, we reckon that he will find it difficult to get going.
The England Masters are still searching for their first win of the season as they take on Sri Lanka in the ongoing International Masters League. The two teams will clash on Monday at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium in Raipur.
The two teams have faced each other in two games so far, with both teams winning one game each.
This match can be watched live on the Jiostar App and Colors Cineplex.
After losing the first match of the season, the Sri Lankan Masters have shown a remarkable turnaround and are coming into this contest on the back of three consecutive wins. They are currently placed 2nd on the points table and a win here will take them through to the semifinals.
Upul Tharanga and Kumar Sangakkara are likely to open the batting for Sri Lanka in this match. The duo has played some good knocks and will hope to give the team a strong start in this match as well. Sri Lanka has some quality batsmen in the middle order as well.
Asela Gunaratne has scored two half-centuries in his last 3 outings. He will have the support of Chinthaka Jayasinghe and Lahiru Thirimanne. While Sri Lanka does have some all-rounders playing lower down the order, the team does lack some depth in its batting.
The bowlers have done a decent job for the team as well. Isuru Udana is Sri Lanka’s leading wicket-taker with 6 wickets and will be joined by Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep in the pace department. Chaturanga de Silva will lead the spin attack and will be supported by Jeevan Mendis.
The England Masters have struggled in this tournament and have lost all the 3 games they have played so far. They are placed at the bottom of the points table and have the worst NRR among all teams. If the team loses this match, England will be eliminated from the tournament.
It has been an all-round failure for England as none of the players have been able to contribute in a meaningful way. The opening pair of Phil Mustard and Ian Bell has struggled against the new ball and hasn’t been able to give the team a good start.
That has put the middle order under pressure and they too have failed to get going. Tim Ambrose did score a half-century in the last match, albeit for a losing cause. England will want the likes of Eoin Morgan and Darren Maddy if they want to win this match.
The bowlers, particularly the seamers, haven’t fared better as well. Ryan Sidebottom and Chris Tremlett have managed to pick just one wicket each. The spinners, Monty Panesar and Chris Schofield have picked up 3 wickets each.
6 of the last 10 T20 matches played here have been won while chasing. Also, in 6 of the last 10 matches, the captain winning the toss has opted to field first. We, therefore, think that the team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first.
The pitch at Raipur is well-balanced and offers a good contest between the bat and the ball. The seamers will get some help with the new ball as there is an even covering of grass on the surface. However, once the batsmen settle down, playing shots will get easier. But they will have to play the ball on its merit.
The spinner will come into action once the ball gets a bit old. Anything over 180 will be tricky to chase at this venue. The weather in Raipur will be warm with temperatures of around 30 degrees.
We are backing the Sri Lanka Masters in winning this match. They have played well over the past week and seem to have found a good balance of players in the playing XI. On the other hand, England has struggled on all fronts and is likely to find it difficult to overcome such a strong opposition.
Bet on the Sri Lanka Masters to win.
