This is a plausible bet when looking at the stats from their previous head-to-head against the Knight Riders. They lost three wickets in their innings against Abu Dhabi in last year’s match. The three dismissals of James Vince, Jordan Cox and Chris Lynn were all out caught.
The Gulf Giants captain has been a regular run-scorer in domestic T20 cricket around the world. He should be a reliable bet. Vince hit 50 runs off 39 balls the last time he played against Abu Dhabi Knight Riders.
If last season is anything to go by, these teams will push each other to the edge. In the league stage of 2024, Gulf Giants ended in second spot. They were two points ahead of Abu Dhabi Knight Riders with ten points. At the end of January 2024, the Knight Riders beat the Gulf Giants by six wickets.
The Giants and Knight Riders are evenly matched with one win each against the other. The Giants won the previous head-to-head by three runs.
Gulf Giants take on Abu Dhabi Knight Riders at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, 19 January 2025. The game can be followed in India by the TV broadcast of the Zee Network and the live-streaming of the FanCode app.
The English opening pair of Adam Lyth and James Vince should lay a strong foundation for the middle order. The opening pair have more than 15000 across both. Shimron Hetmyer adds firepower with his ability to take on any bowling attack. The West Indian has over 4700 runs in his T20 career.
Jordan Cox and wicketkeeper-batter Ollie Robinson offer stability and finishing prowess. They will express themselves in enjoyable batting conditions. 24-year-old Cox has more than 250 runs in the UAE-based tournament.
The Giants boast a promising spin department led by teenage leg-spinning sensation Rehan Ahmed. Aayan Afzal Khan is another young spinner keen on impressing in his own country. The bowling all-rounder has more than 40 T20 wickets in his short career so far.
With Mark Adair's all-round skills and Tymal Mills’ express pace, the bowling lineup is rounded off by Daniel Worrall with his control and swing with the new ball. Saghir Khan further bolsters the pace options. Fast bowler Mills has a record of almost 300 T20 career wickets.
The explosive batters Phil Salt and Kyle Mayers will look to motor along in the powerplay. Mayers is handy with the ball too with a T20 bowling record of just over 50 wickets. He has over 3000 T20 runs. The consistent Joe Clarke and dynamic Michael Pepper add more firepower after the openers have done their part.
Pepper is well-known for his blistering strike rate, particularly in his home T20 tournament. Pepper has a batting strike rate of almost 160 in the Vitality Blast. Youngster Alishan Sharafu adds a local flavour to a batting lineup which will entertain the crowd.
Englishman Laurie Evans offers stability, flair and finishing prowess in the closing stages of the innings. The big-hitting batter has three centuries and 42 half-centuries in an expansive T20 career.
The team's all-round strength is its biggest asset with a plethora of quality players. The Knight Riders are spearheaded by the evergreen Andre Russell and Jason Holder. Holder ha splayed for as many as 11 different T20 teams to accumulate more than 2000 runs and more than 250 wickets in an illustrious T20 career.
Following the all-rounder department is another West Indian in captain Sunil Narine. He will bring all the tricks up his sleeve to the party. Whether taking wickets or not, Narine is one of the most economical bowlers in the tournament going at just over six runs per over.
David Willey adds variety to the bowling attack with his left-arm seam movement in the powerplay. Emerging talent Shahid Butta completes the lineup as an additional pacer. Butta has T10 experience with the Delhi Bulls.
Gulf Giants elected to bat first in their previous game against the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in a day game. This match will be played at night which could influence both captains to bowl first.
The Dubai International Cricket Stadium pitch should provide a balanced contest between bat and ball. The spinners should be assisted by the dry pitch with turn on offer. The pacers should have early swing to work with while the ball is still new. Batters should have ample opportunities to score runs.
Gulf Giants posted a score of 166 for three in 20 overs in their previous match against the same opposition.
Expect matchday conditions in Dubai to be partly cloudy while also warm and extremely humid. There is no rain expected during the match.
The Giants have had a couple of notable individual performances this season, but have failed to click as a unit yet. Given the start to this season, albeit only a few games in, the Knight Riders have looked marginally better than the Giants. We think it is only a matter of time before the Knight Riders hit their stride.
Bet on Abu Dhabi Knight Riders to win this match.
