This is reasonable, considering their first over of their previous game went for 13 runs. That first over demolition was largely down to Johnson Charles blasting two sixes to kickstart the innings.
The right-handed English opener is a gun batter who likes to take advantage of the powerplay. He hit a half-century to open his ILT20 account for the 2025 season and should be set for more contributions throughout the tournament.
Both teams are stacked with T20 talent from around the world. Given the early stages of the tournament, neither team may be too fussed yet by results not going their way. The Knight Riders will need to pick themselves up after a disappointing loss. They have the firepower to do so. The Sharjah Warriors will be ecstatic after a win on the last ball of their previous match.
The teams played each other twice in three days last year. Each team managed a result in their favour. The Knight Riders beat the Warriors by seven wickets before the Warriors responded with a victory by the same margin.
Abu Dhabi Knight Riders will host Sharjah Warriors on Wednesday, 15 January 2025 at Zayed Cricket Stadium for this ILT20 match. The match will be available to view in India on the Zee Network TV broadcast and FanCode app live-stream.
At the top of the order, Phil Salt and Kyle Mayers provide explosive starts. The two power-hitters are capable of dismantling any bowling attack. The English opener hit an unbeaten 71 runs off just under 50 balls in his previous innings.
The middle order is stacked with hard-hitters like Joe Clarke, Michael Pepper and rising UAE star Alishan Sharafu. Their presence means the Knight Riders will be stacked with players who like to play on the front foot. Sharafu hit an important 46 runs and Russell with a quickfire 30 runs both contributed significantly to the batting effort against the Desert Vipers.
The team’s game-changer is undoubtedly Andre Russell. The West Indian all-rounder is a proven match-winner with both bat and ball. Backed by the experienced Laurie Evans and all-rounders Jason Holder and David Willey, the Knight Riders have depth in their lineup.
Holder and Willey bring valuable balance as pace bowlers and capable lower order hitters. Holder and Willey have 254 T20 wickets and 319 T20 wickets respectively.
Skipper Sunil Narine will lead the spin department as a dangerous mystery spinner. The bowling attack is supported by local talent Shahid Butta. Narine and Butta both grabbed a wicket against the Vipers.
At the top, explosive openers Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Johnson Charles provide a potent combination of power and aggression. Englishman Kohler-Cadmore played a brilliant innings of 83 runs not out in his previous match.
Jason Roy, known for his fearless stroke play, will be crucial in setting the tone after the openers have done their duties. Sri Lankan dasher Bhanuka Rajapaksa will give further impetus to the innings. The left-handed batter has 3868 runs in T20s, including one century and 16 half-centuries.
The all-round department is strengthened by UAE’s Rohan Mustafa and Afghanistan’s Karim Janat. Both will be key contributers with bat and ball. Mustafa hit a crucial 45 runs against the Giants. Keemo Paul adds finishing ability and seam-bowling depth.
The West Indian is eight wickets short of 100 T20 wickets.
Sharjah’s bowling lineup is formidable with the swing of skipper Tim Southee and New Zealand speedster Adam Milne. Southee was the star performer with the ball when he took three wickets against Gulf Giants. Spin duties rest on the experienced shoulders of Adil Rashid.
The leg-spinner has ten four-wicket hauls in T20s. Young Muhammad Jawadullah and Harmeet Singh round out a well-rounded squad aiming to make a deep run.
The previous toss between these teams went the way of the Sharjah Warriors. They elected to bowl first in that game. Neither captain may hesitate to do the same in this game.
The pitch in Abu Dhabi should have enough in it for both the batters and bowlers. The seam and swing bowlers will need to maximise their opportunities with the new ball inside the first six overs. The spinners may need to do the bulk of the work after the powerplay on a pitch that may offer some turn because of the dry conditions.
The batters will also be presented with a surface where they can freely play their shots, particularly under the floodlights. The Sharjah Warriors chased a target of 95 when they last met Abu Dhabi Knight Riders.
Matchday conditions will be perfect for a T20 match. The weather on matchday will be sunny, hot and extremely humid. There is no rain expected.
The teams endured contrasting outcomes in their previous games. The Knight Riders were beaten fair and square by the Desert Vipers. The Warriors were part of a last ball thriller when they took on the Gulf Giants. They scraped over the line against the Giants. That winning feeling may put them as slight favorites.
Bet on the Sharjah Warriors to win this match.
