This may be a slightly risky bet because of England’s general batting approach throughout their innings. They tend to show aggression at any stage of the innings. Contrary to most innings though, England started with a maiden against Pakistan in their first innings of their previous Test.
This would be a bet worth throwing your money at. The entire opening over of the first Test was a string of six dot balls. Swinging conditions with the new ball will also favour this outcome.
England will be going to Wellington with form behind them. They will be in high spirits after an all-round display to be proud of. The visitors put up almost 500 runs in their first innings and bowling well in the second innings. New Zealand showed signs that their batting can click, but will be disappointed to have ultimately lost the game to a number of England batters in the first innings. They will want a better performance for their home crowd.
England have continued to extend their run of four wins and only one loss in the five previous Test meetings between the two teams. Both sides will still be evenly matched based on current form overall. Overall, New Zealand have won three of their last five Tests and England have won two of their last five Tests.
The Sony Liv app will provide live-streaming in India for this match. New Zealand play England in the second Test of the series at Basin Reserve from Friday, 6 December 2024 to Tuesday, 10 December 2024.
Leader Tom Latham is joined by Devon Conway to open the batting. They will combine to be a free-flowing opening batting pair. Kane Williamson is a master tactician and masterful modern Test batter. He has 772 runs in his last seven Tests.
The opening Test alone he hit scores of 93 runs and 61 runs. Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell will add attacking flair to the middle-order with the comforts of the solidity that Williamson brings. Mitchell
Tom Blundell takes the role of the wicketkeeper, but is a handy batter in his own right.
Glenn Phillips is a typical x-factor batter with his explosiveness. Him and Daryl Mitchell hit half-centuries in the previous Test. Nathan Smith, although new to the international scene, is a promising all-rounder who brings depth the batting and bowling departments.
The veteran swing bowler Tim Southee, whose prowess with both the new ball and with the older ball make him a key asset. Matt Henry's ability to generate swing and seam movement complements Southee’s skills with the new ball.
Henry has 38 Test wickets in his last seven matches. He took four of those in the first innings of the previous Test against the English. William O’Rourke brings fresh energy as one of the newer members of the fast-bowling group.
England’s opening batting pair, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, offers a combination of elegance and dynamism. Crawley’s height and reach allow him to play dominating strokes, while the shorter Duckett's flair and touch help him dominate the bowlers.
Jacob Bethell is the latest addition to the Test group and has proven to enjoy the new experience with an opening Test unbeaten half-century.
In the middle-order, Joe Root's expertise and consistency provide the backbone of England's batting. Root has more than 1000 Test runs in his previous ten matches alone. He has done so at a batting average of almost 70.
Harry Brook and Ollie Pope will continue the motto of ‘Bazball’ in their attacking stroke play and ability to put high-quality players under early pressure. Brook hammered 171 runs in the first innings of the previous Test. Ben Stokes, as captain and all-rounder, is a key figure with his ability to change the game with the bat, ball or in the field.
The bowling department features a blend of pace and skill with Chris Woakes leading the attack. Woakes' swing and seam movement could threaten on the opening couple of days. Atkinson and Brydon Carse add pace and aggression to the bowling lineup.
Carse took ten wickets in his previous Test. Atkinson has impressed with 43 wickets in his nine prior Test fixtures. Shoaib Bashir brings a knack for taking key wickets. The off-spinner could be effective when the pitch gets flatter.
Both teams may fancy bowling first to make best use of the new ball and swinging conditions on day one. England and New Zealand have a plethora of useful seamers to make the first hour with the ball a nightmare. The previous Test was won by the chasing team.
The pitch at the Basin Reserve in Wellington is known for being green and seam-friendly. There should be good bounce and carry on offer. While the pitch can support spin later in the game as it wears out, it will be helpful to the pacers for the duration. Batters may find the conditions challenging on day one, particularly before lunch. If they can see out that period, they should be able to feast on run-scoring opportunities afterwards.
The match will start with a 35 percent chance of rain on day one. Conditions are expected to improve after that with chances of rain only hovering between zero and ten percent on days two to five. Temperatures will be moderate, but humid to start with. It will get warmer, but less humid following day one.
New Zealand would have felt very much in the game with a score of almost 350 runs in the first innings, but they dropped their high standards thereafter. A number of their batters made contributions, but failed to get to the three-figure mark. Kane Williamson with 93 runs came closest in New Zealand’s first innings.
England had Harry Brook who scored 171 runs in England’s first innings and he put them ahead in the game. England’s bowling is also in good shape after wicket contributions throughout. The current form of England may put them ahead to win the next Test.
Bet on England to win.
