The Dhaka side ended their 2024 campaign against the Chattogram Challengers (now Chittagong Kings). In that match, they only managed six runs in their first two overs. A lower scoring opening two overs may be worth betting on.
Ali is a quality white-ball batter who has been given his chances to shine for the Bangladeshi national team. He has accumulated ten T20 half-centuries, so this would be a reasonable bet.
The Rajshahi team would not have played together much. They will still be figuring out their team dynamics. Dhaka will be looking to start the same way they did in the 2024 season, but will need to find the formula to win more than just once a season.
These two teams don’t have any history to share from the 2024 season, however, the Dhaka team endured a torrid 2024 season. They finished with only two points to show for their efforts which rooted them to the bottom of last season’s table. Both teams lost their first games.
Durbar Rajshahi and Dhaka Capitals will meet each other for this BPL match on Thursday, 2 January 2025 at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur. The FanCode app will provide live-streaming in India.
Opening the batting is Pakistani Mohammad Haris looking to give the team a strong start in the powerplay. 20-year-old Jishan Alam will play with a fearless attitude typical of the modern young T20 player.
Captain Anamul Haque anchors the top-order with his consistency and leadership. He hit an important 65 runs for Durbar Rajshahi in game one. Yasir Ali adds power to the middle-order. He added to the efforts of Anamul Haque when he scored an unbeaten 94 runs off only 47 balls against Fortune Barishal. The duo gives Durbar Rajshahi the mixture of stability and firepower.
The all-round capabilities of Ryan Burl offer both batting depth and leg-spin options. Wicketkeeper-batter Akbar Ali provides finishing prowess and sharp glovework behind the stumps. The promising SM Meherob strengthens the lower middle-order batting and adds variety with spin bowling too. Lahiru Samarakoon is another all-rounder who adds depth to the squad.
The bowling attack is spearheaded by pace duo Taskin Ahmed and Mrittunjoy Chowdhury, who bring speed and control. The star fast bowler Taskin Ahmed took three wickets to start his campaign. Young Hasan Murad’s left-arm orthodox spin will be exciting to watch. He chipped in with two wickets in the season opener.
The experienced all-rounder Thisara Perera leads an inexperienced group. Opening the batting is wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das. He won’t shy away from taking on the bowlers in the powerplay. His opening partner, Tanzid Hasan, is a dynamic young batter equally capable of putting pressure back on the bowlers.
Most of the batters failed in the previous game, except for the opening pair who both made scores in the 30s. Stephen Eskinazi is a top-class performer in domestic T20 cricket. His experience will be vital for holding this batting lineup together.
The all-rounder brigade features skipper Thisara Perera, Alauddin Babu and Farmanullah. Their all-round abilities will be key for extending both batting and bowling lineups. Captain Perera has 4678 runs and 278 wickets in his T20 career.
Left-arm maestro Mustafizur Rahman leads the charge with his variations and pace on the ball. The less experienced Mukidul Islam and spin expertise of Amir Hamza and Nazmul Islam will aim to be reliable back-up options. Amir Hamza is an international cricketer for Afghanistan. Nazmul Islam has also tasted international cricket for Bangladesh.
Young Mukidul Islam has already made an impression in Bangladeshi domestic cricket. Alauddin Babu and Mukidul Islam were the two chief destroyers for the Capitals against the Rangpur Riders with three and two wickets respectively. Mustafizur Rahman also took a wicket.
At the Shere Bangla National Stadium in the 2024 BPL, 17 of the 22 matches had the team winning the toss electing to bowl first. Both captains may stick to that trend in this match.
Both teams may have to navigate a dry surface which should be a paradise for the spinners and pace bowlers with variations. The cloud cover may suit swing bowling for part of the innings, but it should be the slower bowlers who are most productive. The batters may need to work for their runs. Dhaka’s only victory in 2024 came from them chasing a 144-run target at Mirpur.
Conditions are expected to be cloudy, moderately warm and humid. There is only a mere five percent chance of rain on matchday in Mirpur.
The Rajshahi side will be interesting to watch as a new-look group being put together. The home side will bring fresh energy to the competition. The visitors will have history from last year to contend with. They struggled after their first match of the season last season and ended at the foot of the table. They will need to rebuild to be a much more consistent side this year.
Bet on Durbar Rajshahi to win this match.
