The pitch at the Manuka Oval is balanced and not the easiest for the batsmen. 3 of the last 5 BBL matches played here have seen at least 13 wickets fall and we are expecting that trend to continue.
Short was the leading run-scorer for the previous season and scored 541 runs at an average of 60.11. He also has a good record against Sydney Thunder, averaging 30.00 in his 13 innings against them.
The Adelaide Strikers begin their fresh season at the BBL on Tuesday as they face Sydney Thunder at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.
The two teams will face each other in 21 matches to date. The Strikers have a slight edge with 12 wins compared to 9 for the Thunder.
This match will be live-streamed on the Disney+ Hotstar App. One can also watch it live on the Star Sports Network.
Sydney Thunder had a forgettable outing last time around as they managed to win just 1 of their 10 matches and ended with the wooden spoon. Nevertheless, the franchise has made a few changes to the squad and hopes to put up a better performance.
The biggest change in the batting line-up is the inclusion of Sam Billings. He is one of the most explosive batsmen in the league and if he gets going, Thunder could post a match-winning total. David Warner is available for the entire series and given his talent and experience, he is an invaluable part of the franchise.
Sherfane Rutherford has also been included in the squad in a bid to strengthen the middle order which will also see Oliver Davies and Chris Green. Sam Konstas is an exciting young talent who might feature at the top of the order.
The Thunder lost Gurinder Sandhu to the Renegades but they have bolstered the pace department by bringing in Lockie Ferguson. He will join hands with Wes Agar, while Tanveer Sangha may be included as the specialist spinner.
The Adelaide Strikers put up a good show last year and made it to reach the playoffs. However, they were knocked out by eventual champions, Brisbane Heat, in the Challenger game.
The Adelaide Strikers have plenty of firepower in their batting unit thanks to the presence of players like Chris Lynn, Matthew Short, D’Arcy Short, and Alex Ross. Matthew Short had an excellent outing last year as he finished as the top-scorer of the tournament with 541 runs.
Alex Carey is on international duty and that means Harry Nielsen could be the first-choice wicket-keeper. The Strikers also have a pretty strong pace department. Henry Thornton and Brendan Doggett are likely to begin the attack with the new ball while Jamie Overton could come in as the first change.
The spin department consists of Fabian Allen, Cameron Boyce, and Lloyd Pope.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first.
The pitch at the Manuka Oval is balanced and provides a good contest between the bat and the ball. The average first-inning score here is around 160. The bowlers will get some movement with the new ball and the batsmen need to be careful with their shot selection. As the match progresses, the surface gets easier to bat on.
The weather at Canberra will be overcast and there might be some drizzling in the evening.
We are backing the Adelaide Strikers to win this match. They have a strong squad at their disposal that has plenty of batting options. The bowling unit is also well-balanced. Also, Adelaide’s recent record against Sydney Thunder is pretty strong.
Bet on Adelaide Strikers to win this match.
