The pitch at the Manuka Oval isn’t the easiest for the bowlers. Only 4 of the last 12 matches played here have seen 14 or more wickets fall and we aren’t expecting many wickets in this game.
The boundaries at the Manuka Oval aren’t the longest. Also, the pitch provides plenty of help for the batsmen to score runs. As both teams have some aggressive batsmen, we will likely see big overs in this match.
The Melbourne Stars are still searching for their first win of the season as they take on Sydney Thunder at the Manuka Oval on Saturday.
The two teams have faced each other in 20 matches, with both teams winning 10 games.
This match will be live-streamed on the Disney+ Hotstar App. One can also watch it live on the Star Sports Network.
The Stars are struggling as they approach the halfway point of their journey in this season. With four losses in as many matches, they are firmly planted at the bottom of the table.
Despite having a star-studded batting unit, the Stars have been unable to put up match-winning totals on several occasions. And when they put up a big score, the bowlers let them down. The team needs to improve in all aspects of the game to turn things around.
Ben Duckett was in blazing form in the team’s latest fixture as he scored 68 runs from just 29 deliveries. His opening partner, Thomas Rogers on the other hand has struggled. Similarly, the middle order with some big names like Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Sam Harper will have to perform better.
The bowling has been unimpressive as well. The two seamers, Adam Milne and Peter Siddle have picked up only 3 wickets each. Usama Mir, who was playing his first match of the season, was quite expensive.
Sydney Thunder is coming into this contest after losing to its neighbors, the Sydney Sixers. However, the team has had plenty of time to regroup and work on its weaknesses.
We are yet to see the fluent best of David Warner, who is playing the full season this time. With his opening partner, Sam Konstas called for International duty, we are likely to see Jason Sangha replace him in the playing XI.
Cameron Bancroft and Oliver Davies played well in the match against the Sixers and the team will expect a similar performance from them in this match as well. Thunder is home to some of the best all-rounders like Daniel Sams and Chris Green, who not only add depth to the batting but are also useful as bowlers.
Nathan McAndrew has gone wicketless so far but his new-ball partner Lockie Ferguson is the leading wicket-taker for the team with 5 wickets. The two spinners, Green and Tanveer Sangha have picked up 5 wickets between them.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first.
The pitch at the Manuka Oval is usually good to bat on. The surface is hard and flat, offering excellent pace and carry. The seamers will get some help initially but as the match progresses, playing the shots will get easier. The spinners who bowl a good line will get some wickets.
Overall, we can expect a good contest between the bat and the ball. The team batting first will look to score at least 180 runs.
The weather is likely to be clear with temperatures of around 20 degrees.
The Stars have struggled to get going this year and must come up with something special to win here. While Sydney Thunder isn’t in the best of form as well, we think they enjoy a slight edge here.
Bet on Sydney Thunder to win.
