The MCG isn’t the easiest ground to bat on. As both teams have some quality bowlers playing for them, the batsmen will find it difficult to go after the bowling and we are unlikely to see such a high-scoring over.
Daniel Lawrence and Thomas Rogers were in good form during the last match as they scored 24 runs for the opening wicket. On the other hand, the Renegades’ openers, particularly De Kock, aren’t in the best of forms this season. We are therefore backing the Stars to get a better start.
De Kock hasn’t been in the best of forms this season. He has scored over 23.5 runs in just 1 of his 4 innings this season. We are therefore predicting another mediocre outing for him.
The first Melbourne Derby of the ongoing BBL season is around the corner as the Melbourne Renegades face off against the Melbourne Stars this week. The match will be played on Tuesday at the iconic MCG.
Both teams have faced each other on 24 occasions so far. The Melbourne Stars are the dominant team with 15 wins, while the Melbourne Renegades have won 9.
This match will be live-streamed on the Disney+ Hotstar App or can be watched live on the Star Sports Network.
The Melbourne Stars had a rough start to the season as they lost their first 3 matches. However, the team has made a strong comeback in the last week as it comes into this contest on the back of 3 consecutive wins. As a result, they have climbed up to the 4th place on the points table.
The Stars have a pretty strong batting line-up and will bank on that to deliver the goods. The inclusion of England's top-order batsman Daniel Lawrence has further fortified the line-up. Lawrence, playing his first match of the season on Sunday, scored a brilliant half-century.
He will be joined by Thomas Rogers at the top of the order. They will be followed by Hilton Cartwright, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis in the middle order. Stoinis was in a particularly belligerent mood in the last match as he smashed 55 of just 19 balls in the last match.
The Stars have two capable all-rounders in the form of Imad Wasim and Beau Webster, who add depth to the batting. Coming to the bowling, the unavailability of Haris Rauf does leave a dent in the seam attack. In his absence, Joel Paris and Mark Steketee will likely open the batting with the new ball.
Corey Rocchiccioli joins the team as a specialist spinner and will be supported by Maxwell and Imad Wasim.
The Melbourne Renegades have been rather inconsistent this season and have managed to win just 1 of the 6 matches played so far. With just 4 matches to go for them including this one, the Renegades will have to win this match to keep their play-off hopes alive.
The opening pair of Joe Clarke and Quinton De Kock has been rather inconsistent. While Joe Clarke has played a couple of good innings, de Kock has failed to carry on with his form from the World Cup. In comparison, the middle order has fared better.
Jake Fraser-McGurk is the leading run-scorer for the team with 175. He, along with Shaun Marsh will be the key batsman the team.
Will Sutherland has proved to be a reliable all-rounder so far. He is the joint-highest wicket-taker for the team with 7 wickets and has also scored 86 runs at a strike rate of 165.38. He will feature in the pace attack alongside Kane Richardson and Tom. Rogers.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman has been consistent with his off breaks, picking up 7 wickets. He will be supported by Adam Zampa at the other end.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first.
The pitch at the MCG is well-balanced and provides for an even contest between the bat and the ball. The seamers can expect plenty of swing when the ball is new. The batsmen will need to be careful and get their eye in before they can start playing their shots.
The average first-inning score on this ground is around 150. The pitch does get a bit easy to bat on as the match progresses.
However, the ground isn’t a batting paradise like some of the other venues. The weather is likely to be overcast and there is a forecast for rain throughout the day. As a result, we can expect some delays or interruptions.
While both teams have been below par with their performance, we feel that the Melbourne Stars have an edge in this contest. They have won 3 consecutive matches as they head to this contest and have good momentum behind them. On the other hand, the Melbourne Renegades, despite having a strong team, haven’t fared well and are likely to struggle.
Bet on the Melbourne Stars to win.
