Hasaranga is one of the best spinners for Sri Lanka in recent years. He has picked up at least 2 wickets in 6 of his last 9 ODIs. He has picked up 10 wickets in his previous 2 matches at the Premadasa Stadium and has 5 wickets in 2 matches against Australia. Seeing his record, we are backing him to pick up at least 2 wickets in this match.
The Premadasa Stadium isn’t a high-scoring venue and the batsmen will not find it easy to get after the bowlers. The average run rate here is around 4.88 and we are therefore unlikely to see a big over in this match
Sri Lanka and Australia will make their final preparations for the upcoming Champions Trophy as they face each other in a two-match ODI series starting on Wednesday. The first match will be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The two teams have faced each other in 104 games. Australia won 64 while Sri Lanka won 36. 4 matches ended without any result.
This match can be watched live on the Sony Liv App and FanCode App. It will also be telecast on the Sony Sports Network.
After a disappointing end to the Test series, Sri Lanka will hope to bounce back in the white-ball format as they take on the World Champions.
Sri Lanka has retained the same ODI squad that toured New Zealand, with the exception of Chamindu Wickramasinghe. The batting line-up remains the same with Pathun Nissanka and Avishka Fernando likely to open the batting. Nissanka has been in good form of late and will hold the key if the home team wants a good start.
The middle order has some experienced campaigners like Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, and Nuwanidu Fernando, while all-rounders Dunith Wellalage and Kamindu Mendis also add heft to the spin department.
Talking about spin, Sri Lanka has bet heavily on the slower bowlers, including Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, and Jeffrey Vanderday. Asitha Fernando and Lahiry Kumara are the two experienced seamers with Eshan Malinga and Mohamed Shiraz helping them if the need arises.
After some terrific performances in Test matches which saw them win the Border Gavaskar Trophy and Warne Muralidharan Trophy, Australia will now switch gears and look to settle in a good rhythm before they head to Pakistan.
The visitors have some limited options for this series as a few of their key players who were named for the two-match series here have withdrawn due to injuries. These include Mitchell Marsh, Pat Cummins, Marcus Stoinis, and Josh Hazlewood.
Mitchell Starc is also unlikely to play in this match to get some rest after being a part of the Test squad. That said, Australia still has plenty of fast-bowling options at its disposal. Spencer Johnson, Ben Dwarshuis, and Nathan Ellis have little experience playing in the ODIs but have put up good performances in their recent domestic and league outings.
Aaron Hardie and Sean Abbott have also been included in the squad and they can add depth to the batting. The team is likely to be led by either Travis Head or Steve Smith, who will be joined in the batting line-up by Jake Fraser-McGurk, Glenn Maxwell, Marnus Labuschagne, and Josh Inglis.
The team winning the toss will likely opt to bat first.
The pitch at the Premadasa Stadium is usually balanced. The average first-inning score here is around 225. While the pitch offers good pace and bounce during the first innings, the batsmen will have to choose their shots wisely. The surface slows down as the match progresses and the spinners will get help during the second half.
The weather is likely to remain cloudy with temperatures of around 30 degrees.
We are backing Australia in winning this match. While they are missing some of the key players, Australia still has plenty of firepower in its squad. Some of their batsmen are in good form and the team also has a well-balanced bowling attack. That said, the Sri Lankans are a formidable force, especially at home, and we can expect a close contest.
Bet on Australia to win.
