The Nawabs could be on the receiving end of a dot ball on the first ball of the game. That would be a repeat of how their innings started against the New York Strikers.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Avishka Fernando are likely to open the batting for the Nawabs. They will be familiar with what to expect from subcontinental batting conditions. They also got off to a rollicking start with 42 runs in just under four overs against the Strikers.
The points table is packed with teams on a similar points tally. That makes this a crunch game for either team’s chances of getting into a knockout spot. The Nawabs started off slowly before starting to kick into gear in their recent games. The Tigers have had mixed results throughout. This match could be a battle of which Asian players adapt to conditions the fastest.
The UP Nawabs are new to the Abu Dhabi T10 so this will be the first time that the teams meet. The Bangla Tigers won two of their opening five games. The UP Nawabs have won three of their first five games.
In India, the Disney+ Hotstar app will provide you with your live-streaming needs for this Abu Dhabi T10 match. The Bangla Tigers and UP Nawabs are scheduled to face off at Zayed Cricket Stadium on Saturday, 30 November 2024.
The charismatic Shakib Al Hasan will lead the group. Afghan duo Hazratullah Zazai and Mohammad Shahzad will go all-out attack in the powerplay. The left-handed Zazai has piled up 137 runs in the first five T10 2024 matches. He has hit one half-century this tournament.
Both opening batters will look to mount serious pressure on the opening bowlers with their fearless and ruthless approach to the T10 format. A rapid-fire start from this pair could be ominous.
The middle-order of the team lineup is stacked with quality genuine all-rounders. From Dasun Shanaka down to Rashid Khan, the team will not be short of explosiveness with the bat or ball. All five of Dasun Shanaka, Liam Livingstone, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shakib Al Hasan and Rashid Khan can take the game away with the bat alone.
They will continue the aggression from above them in the batting order. Bangladeshi Al Hasan hit an unbeaten 29 runs and claimed a wicket against the Ajman Bolts. Pakistani Ahmed hit a quickfire 21 runs in the same innings. Sri Lankan Shanaka has hit 118 runs, including a half-century, in his first four innings of this year’s tournament. He can provide a couple of medium-pace overs.
All of Livingstone, Ahmed, Al Hasan and Khan offer some fantastic spin options with huge variety in the shape of right-arm leg-spin, right-arm off-spin and left-arm orthodox. They could be key on a slow surface.
The pace department is driven by two Englishmen. The energy of Henry Brookes and the discipline of left-arm pacer David Payne could make the powerplay and death overs a tricky time to bat.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz will serve as the captain and a formidable opening batter. He was front and centre of the chase against the New York Strikers when he hit an unbeaten 31 runs. Fellow Asian Avishka Fernando is another key ball-striker in the Nawabs lineup. “The Spiceman” Andre Fletcher brings tremendous T20 experience and a strong presence to the crease.
He was explosive against the Strikers with a boundary every second ball in hitting 18 off six not out.
Dawid Malan will be used as one of the “bankers” of the batting lineup. He is a consistent run-scorer with the ability to dictate the tempo. He will be at the forefront of some of the key batting partnerships. Odean Smith brings international experience and all-round capabilities.
Odean Smith will be used as a hard-hitting pinch-hitter with the bat, while also being a handy medium-pace bowler in the middle overs. Curtis Campher and Khalid Shah round out the batting lineup.
Adil Rashid leads the bowling attack with his leg-spin. He is commonly known for breaking the game wide open with wicket-taking balls. Left-armers Tymal Mills and Binura Fernando bring speed and variety.
They are equally menacing at the start and end of an innings. The Englishman has eight wickets in his first four games while the Sri Lankan has eight wickets in his first five games.
This game will be played as a day game in Abu Dhabi. Taking that into account, both captains could be comfortable with batting first. Their tactics may be reliant on putting up a score before the spinners use the advantage of dry conditions to defend their total.
The sunlight is expected to bake the pitch during the day. The spinners may find this pitch rewarding as the pitch dries out. Both teams will expect batting to be easier in the first innings and slow down in the second innings. The team batting first may target a minimum of 120 runs in their ten overs to have runs to play with.
The conditions on Saturday are expected to be mostly sunny, warm and humid. As has been the trend throughout the tournament, there is a zero percent chance of rain.
Given the first games of each team’s season, you can expect this to be a competitive match. Only a single win from the Nawabs separates the two in those first five rounds. The Nawabs have worked their way up towards the top of the table. They will want another win to maintain their status there.
The Tigers will be desperate for a win to claim their way off the foot of the table.
