Everything About the IPL

Founded in 2007, the popularity of the IPL continues to snowball every single year. It is arguably the most popular cricket tournament on the planet, in terms of viewership and entertainment value, surpassing even the Cricket World Cup

Initially, there were eight franchises that competed in the IPL, but this has since expanded to 10:

  1. Chennai Super Kings
  2. Delhi Capitals
  3. Gujarat Titans
  4. Kolkata Knight Riders
  5. Lucknow Super Giants
  6. Mumbai Indians
  7. Punjab Kings
  8. Rajasthan Royals
  9. Royal Challengers Bengaluru
  10. Sunrisers Hyderabad

IPL seasons run between March and May, with more than a dozen Indian cities hosting games.

The format of the tournament sees the IPL teams split into two groups of five, with a round-robin followed by play-offs. The top four teams - which is based on aggregate points - qualify for the playoffs with the top two teams facing off for a place in the final in a match called Qualifier 1.

The other two sides play the Eliminator, with the winner of that match going on to play the team that was beaten in Qualifier 1 to book the other spot in the final of the Indian Premier League.

Various awards are given out at the end of the IPL season each year, including the Most Valuable Player - Sunil Narine won it in 2024 - the Orange Cap (for most runs scored by a batter) and Purple Cap (for the most wickets taken by a bowler).

The IPL is usually a trendsetter: it was the first sporting event to be broadcast live on YouTube, the first to include the impact player rule, and has now introduced a better version of the DRS, expected to become the standard in cricket very soon.

What Is The IPL Auction?

The IPL auction is one of the things that makes the tournament stand out from rival events.

Each team is given a budget to spend on squad salaries, with cricketers able to put themselves forward for selection. They are given a base price, but teams can outbid each other as high as they like: the record for the most expensive player was broken twice ahead of the 2024 season.

Mitchell Starc became the most expensive signing in the history of the IPL when he was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for 24.75 crore Indian rupees. The Australia bowler's price surpassed the 20.5 cr that his team-mate Pat Cummins was bought for just a day earlier in the auction. The fact that both these players helped their respective teams to the IPL 2024 Finals will only encourage others to break the bank on players in the future.

How We Rate the Best IPL Betting Sites

When we rate and rank the best IPL betting sites in India, we assess various factors such as:

Trust and Security

We won't recommend any unlicensed bookmakers here at OCBscores. If you're looking to bet on IPL, we will only feature legal and safe IPL betting sites to you.

Range of Bets

Bookmakers have different markets when it comes to the IPL. Broadly speaking, the more bets there are to pick from, the better it is for the player.

Odds

Shopping around for the best match prices at IPL betting sites isn't an easy task. This is why we make sure we check out the value of the IPL odds at online bookmakers to make sure you're getting a good deal during the season.

Bonuses and Promotions

IPL betting offers are available at a lot of online bookmakers nowadays. But some deals may seem too good to be true. We check the small print of the terms and conditions to see if they are fair.

Mobile Usability

Many cricket fans now prefer to use their smartphone for accessing IPL bookmakers. Here at OCBscores, we check how well betting sites are optimised for mobile, and see if they're offering mobile betting apps too.

Payment Methods

Indian payment methods such as UPI and PhonePe should be offered. Some IPL betting sites even allow cryptocurrency options like Bitcoin to be added as funds. We also check out how long it will take for you to withdraw winnings and receive the money you won.

Customer Support

A lot of IPL bookmakers have 24/7 coverage these days, via live chat and options like email. But you may prefer to have the choice of phone customer support, or to get help via social media

How to decide which site is for you during IPL season

While our OCBscores experts have picked out the online bookmakers we rate as the best for IPL betting sites in India, it is partly a matter of personal preference which one you decide to go for.

It is recommended to work out what is important to you - High withdrawal limits? Good IPL odds? A range of markets to bet on? - and select one of the IPL bookmakers that thrives in that area.

Remember, there is no reason why you cannot sign up with a few different online operators. Use them for some time and then decide which is the best fit for you to stick with in the future.
