AUS vs SL Match Preview

The Australian side is being coached by Andrew McDonald and they are led by Pat Cummins on the field. Aussies will now be under a lot of pressure after the couple of losses they had to endure against South Africa and India. These losses mean they are now languishing in 9th position and to make matters worse they have a terrible net run rate at the moment. Their fielding has also been a big reason for concern. The fielders dropped several catches during the opposition's innings.

Aussies brought in Josh Inglis as a replacement for under-performing Alex Carey against the South Africans but it did not affect the match as he was dismissed by 5 runs. It is the first time since 1992 that Australia has dropped their first couple of games in the World Cup. It also means that their plans for the World Cup are now in jeopardy. The batting so far has been so below par in both the games that they are yet to cross the 200-run mark. Mitchell Marsh is going to open the innings with David Warner. Both these batters have a poor record against Sri Lankans. Steve Smith has had a better run against the Lankans though with 4 fifties in 10 innings.

The leading run-getter for Australia is Marnus Labuschagne in the batting department. The inconsistent performance from the middle order has been the reason for worry for the Australian management. The Australian bowling department has also not done too well under the leadership of Cummins. Although the leading bowler for Australia is Josh Hazlewood, the bowler to watch out for is Mitchell Starc. He has picked up 27 wickets against the Lankans in 14 contests with an average of 18.88. Adam Zampa has also done a reasonable job against Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan team is being led by Dasun Shanaka and coached by Chris Silverwood in the World Cup. In their last encounter, the Sri Lankans had a good opportunity to beat the Pakistanis after they had posted a healthy score of 344 runs on the board for the loss of 9 wickets. However, Pakistan embarked on a World Record second innings chase that condemned the Sri Lankan side to yet another defeat in the tournament. It is pretty much clear where the problem area for the Sri Lankans is. First, they conceded a record 428 runs which was followed by allowing a world record run chase. They have given away 773 runs in the first couple of games.

The Sri Lankan bowling attack needs to pull up its socks as their batsmen are doing a great job with the bowlers not responding. The Sri Lankan innings will be opened by Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka. Nissanka hit a fifty in the first match. Sri Lanka may decide to bring in Dimuth Karunaratne as Perera has not been consistent so far. But all eyes will be on Kusal Mendis who seems to have peaked in the World Cup. He has hit a fifty and a hundred in the last two games played by Sri Lanka. In the last 10 games for Sri Lanka Mendis is averaging more than 60.

The support in the middle order for Mendis will come from Sadeera Samarawickrama. He hit a hundred against Pakistan. Apart from these two batters, the Lankan batting appears to be weak. The bowling attack has also looked indifferent and has managed to pick up just 9 wickets in the first couple of games. The leading bowler for Sri Lanka is Dilshan Madhushanka with a haul of 4 wickets. Other couple of key bowlers for Lankans are Dunith Wellalage and Maheesha Pathirana. but they have conceded a lot of runs in their last couple of games.

Dream11 Prediction

If there was one game where the Australian batters could find form this is the one. The Sri Lankan bowling unit has looked well below par in both of their matches. They are pretty much clueless when under pressure from the attacking batters. The Aussie batters should not have any excuses against this attack as they have a lot of experience and quality not to mention the brute force to go along with it. Another defeat will be catastrophic for the Aussies. They will be desperate for a win here and we expect they will get it. We will bet with Australia to win this encounter.
