Our OCB guide to Wankhede Stadium tells you all that you need to know so read on for more.

Capable of welcoming more than 30,000 people following renovations that were carried out to modernise the ground for the 2011 Cricket World Cup in India, it is now mainly known as being the home of the Mumbai Indians in the IPL

Wankhede Stadium was one of the main venues used for the 2023 Cricket World Cup when the tournament came back to India. The Mumbai ground was where India beat New Zealand in the semi-finals, when Virat Kohli took Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing records for the most ODI hundreds and the most runs scored in an edition of the World Cup.

Tendulkar and the great Sunil Gavaskar are among the icons to have been recognised by having stands named after them here: Tendulkar scored 450 runs in ODIs there, by far more than any other batsman here.

Wankhede Stadium India Pitch Report

Wankhede Stadium Pitch Report

Wankhede Stadium is famous for its red soil pitch, which has traditionally led to a bouncier surface that is thought to favour batters over bowlers. However, this has not always been the case and there was controversy here back in 2004 when it hosted the fourth test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia.

When the ball turned from the off it led to a short Test match won by the home side in two and a half days of play despite rain, leaving Australia captain Ricky Ponting unhappy. He described the Wankhede Stadium pitch as like a "minefield".

In T20 matches at the Wankhede Stadium, scoring tends to be on the high side. During 2024, data from Cricmetric shows the average first innings score here to be over 188 and it was even higher the year before, when average T20 scores almost topped 200 on the Mumbai ground.

There is a big advantage when it comes to the toss at the start of a match as 56.8% of chasing teams win T20 matches here, compared to 43.2% of the sides setting a target. Fast bowlers perform well here with the lowest average on the ground, while medium paces tend to have a high economy rate in T20s with batters able to get them away more easily. Rohit Sharma has shown the way to bat at the Wankhede Stadium as he has scored more than 1,000 runs here.
