The Sinhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground is one of Sri Lanka's regular Test venues. Often also referred to as the SSC Cricket Ground, the home of Sinhalese Sports Club is often described as "the Lord's of Sri Lanka" due to its importance and long, proud history.

Sinhalese Sports Club is a cricket ground with a 10,000 capacity so it is not one of Asia's largest Test stadiums, but certainly does not lack atmosphere or presence. Fans can gather on grass embankments and the venue has been used for various important tournaments such as the Cricket World Cup in 1996 and the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy, both of which were in SL.

Everything from Tests and T20Is are played at the SSC Cricket Ground, though in recent years, most ODIs and T20Is have been held at other Sri Lankan venues such as R. Premadasa, Pallekele, and Dambulla.

Today's Match Predictions

Although not the official headquarters of Sri Lanka Cricket, the SSC is widely regarded as the spiritual home of Sri Lankan cricket.

SL stars like Marvan Atapattu, Mahela Jayawardene and Dimuth Karunaratne played here and it is where Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara put on a world-record 624 partnership.

Sinhalese Sports Club Pitch Report

Recent Test matches at SSC have produced moderate scoring conditions, with average first-innings totals closer to 300, indicating a balanced surface that assists both batters and spinners.

With big T20s and ODIs now held at other Sri Lankan grounds more often than not, there is not a lot of recent data available for limited overs matches at the Sinhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground.

However, the Sinhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground pitch report shows it takes a lot of spin, with Muttiah Muralitharan and Rangana Herath among the stars to have thrived here.

In Tests, batting first has often provided an advantage at the SSC, with teams winning a majority (around 55–60%) of matches after setting a total.

FAQs

Sinhalese Sports Club does not hold a lot of limited-overs cricket matches these days, with other Colombo grounds having usurped it. Test scoring here has been moderate, not consistently low, in recent years.

The Sinhalese Sports Club pitch report shows it is a spin-friendly surface, as shown by the high numbers of wickets taken by the likes of Rangana Herath and Muttiah Muralitharan here.

Colombo has a tropical climate, with temperatures averaging around 30°C year-round. The city experiences two monsoon seasons, with May–June and October–November typically being the wettest periods.

The Sinhalese Sports Club can be a good place to bat — Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara had a Test partnership of more than 600 runs here — but the pitch generally offers increasing assistance to spin as the match progresses.
