Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium - which is often referred to as just Uppal Stadium for short - is the home of IPL side Sunrisers Hyderabad, also known as SRH. The stadium is also where the defunct franchise Deccan Chargers played their home games.
Known as a high-scoring venue, Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium was where Pakistan set a record chase for the Cricket World Cup in 2023 when they hit 345/4, while other historic moments at the venue include India winning their 500th one day international at Hyderabad. Named after the former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi, one of the ends at the ground is named after VVS Laxman, with the decision announced when the iconic batter retired in 2012.
Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium is where Alzarri Joseph had record bowling figures for the IPL of 6/12, while the ground was also where Jonny Bairstow and David Warner each made a century in the same innings for SRH against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2019.
Records show that the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium is a fantastic place to bat, with the ground having been home to a number of record-breaking moments. During the 2024 season, the Hyderabad ground had an average first innings score of almost 205, which was partly down to hosts Sunrisers Hyderabad scoring a massive 277/3 against Mumbai Indians.
Unlike a lot of other grounds used for the IPL, the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium pitch report shows a narrow advantage for batting first, which captains should keep in mind at the toss. In T20s here, 51.1% of teams batting first won, compared to 48.9% of sides chasing.
Data from Cricmetric also shows that fast bowlers have the highest economy rate at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, although they can pose a threat with the ball as they also have some of the lowest economy rates at the Hyderabad ground in T20 matches as well. The Hyderabad Cricket Association won the award for best ground and pitch at the end of the IPL in 2024, so the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium pitch report shows it has a top surface.
