The Inderjit Singh Bindra Stadium in Mohali, which is sometimes also referred to as the PCA Stadium, is instantly recognisable due to a very unusual layout of floodlights, due to the proximity to the nearby Chandigarh airport. Our OCB guide to the Inderjit Singh Bindra Stadium tells you everything that you need to know.
Named after Inderjit Singh Bindra - the former PCA and BCCI head - it was established in 1993 and it is regularly used to host international matches of various formats involving Indian teams.
With a capacity of just under 30,000 the Mohali ground has held key games in the 2016 World Twenty20 and the 2011 Cricket World Cup. IT was where India beat Pakistan in the semi-finals in the latter tournament and also lifted the trophy of the former by defeating Australia in the final.
Bowler Anil Kumble took his 500th Test wicket in a 2006 match here against England and Rohit Sharma hit a memorable 208 not out in an ODI against Sri Lanka on this ground back in 2017. The ends are named after Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh and IPL side Punjab Kings played here until the team moved into the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium.
Mohali has a reputation as being a quick pitch and is arguably the fastest in India. The Inderjit Singh Bindra Stadium pitch report typically shows a lot of assistance for the quicks and this is usually kept in mind by any captains and coaches who are picking their teams for games here.
New Zealand's bowlers skittled India all out for just 89 here in 1999 and there is often a level of moisture in the pitch early on here, which is taken into account by captains who won the toss.
The Mohali ground has typically seen strong scoring in Twenty20 matches. During 2023, the average first innings score here was 177.5, a slight rise on the figures from the year before. Chasing offers a significant advantage in T20s at the Inderjit Singh Bindra Stadium as 54% of teams batting second win, compared to 46% of teams that set a target in the first innings.
Off-break bowlers have the best economy rate for T20 fixtures that have been played at the Inderjit Singh Bindra Stadium, but medium paces and quicks take their wickets at a lower rate.
