One of India's biggest cricket stadiums, Eden Gardens is a historic ground and a venue of high national importance. Located in Kolkata, Eden Gardens was built in 1864, so it is more than 160 years old. Eden Gardens is often called the "Mecca of Indian cricket" due to its age.

Eden Gardens was the venue for the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 final and it welcomed a record crowd of 110,564 when India played Sri Lanka in the semi-finals of the 1996 Cricket World Cup. Test cricket has been played here since the 1930s, while it has been sparingly used for some other major sporting events such as the India v Uruguay football match in the 1984 Nehru Cup.

Indian iconic cricketers Sourav Ganguly and Pankaj Roy have stands named after them at Eden Gardens, which is where Kapil Dev took an ODI hat-trick. Spinner Harbhajan Singh has also got a hat-trick here, against Australia in 2000/01, becoming the first Indian ever to take one in Tests.

Some other historic moments at Eden Gardens include the great Sachin Tendulkar scoring his 10,000th Test run and RCB scored the lowest total in IPL history at the Kolkata ground as well.

Eden Gardens Pitch Report

Eden Gardens Pitch Report

Eden Gardens tends to have high scoring, with the average first innings score for a T20 match in 2024 standing at just under 198. In fact, that year's data was the highest average scoring for the Eden Garden pitch report in recent times, with 2021 on record as a very low-scoring year.

Chasing is definitely an advantage, with captains likely to take note of this as well as the latest Eden Gardens pitch report. Figures collected by Cricmetric show that 53.8% of T20 matches at the Kolkata venue are won by the chasing team, compared to 44.9% of teams batting first. Fast bowlers have the highest economy rate in T20s at Eden Gardens, which shows how hard it can be for the quicks to have a significant impact on contests here. Leg-break bowlers have got the lowest average, so the spinners are likely to be heavily involved from the off at Eden Gardens.
