WS vs CES Team Previews

Western Storm

Western Storm played their last game in the competition against Northern Diamonds. Batting first in a rain-curtailed game, Northern Diamonds scored 281 runs for the loss of 3 wickets from 43 overs. The Western Storm women made a good sporting effort to chase down the score and got reasonably close to the target. But this effort was not sufficient to win the game. Western Storm women scored 250 runs for the loss of 7 wickets from their 43 overs. Northern Diamonds recorded a win by a margin of 31 runs.

The victory for Northern Diamonds was achieved largely due to the efforts of Winfield Hill who hit 83 runs. She was also involved in a century-opening wicket partnership with Sterre Kalis. This paved the way for a hard-hitting 68 from Leah Dobson that allowed the Diamonds to set a big target of 281 for 3 from 43 overs. Mollie Robbins was the best bowler on the scene for Western Storm picking up 2 wickets for 41 runs. She also ran Kalis out. However, Robbins received little support from other bowlers that would have allowed her to restrict the progress of the opposition batters.

The Strom women made a valiant attempt at chasing the target but fell short by 31 runs in the end. This was in the light of some probing leg spin bowling from Katie Levick and Armitage. These two bowlers picked up 3 wickets each and developed unsurmountable pressure on the opposition in the middle overs. The Western Storm batters were up against it right from the word go. The experienced opening pair of Wilson and Luff displayed cool heads under pressure and tried to get the team back in contention with a 107-run partnership. But it was not sufficient in the end.

Central Sparks

The Central Sparks women are also going into this game after a couple of losses in a row. They played their last game against Sunrisers in Chelmsford on 10th September. This 47th game of the tournament saw Central Sparks batting first and raising a score of 227 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. The Sunrisers chased this mediocre target easily in 45 overs for the loss of 6 wickets. This win can be attributed to the half-centuries scored by Scrivens, Carr, and Villiers. The unbeaten century by Abigail Freeborn was wasted as she could not get her side to win.

Carr scored 58, Villiers hit 56, and Scrivens scored 51 runs allowing the Sunrisers to reach a score of 228 for 6 from their quota of 50 overs. The efforts made by these Sunrisers batswomen were slightly overshadowed by a maiden hundred from Abigail Freeborn. She batted almost to the end of the innings scoring 107 runs from 140 balls to get her side to post 227 runs on the board. This score was not sufficient to get her team to a win. Central Sparke decided to bat first after winning the toss. They did not get off to a good one as Bethan Ellis was clean-bowled without scoring.

Freeborn on the other hand was in her stride as soon as she clipped Suren Kumar for a boundary to raise a half-century for Sparks in 10th over. The scoreboard was kept running with some smart running between the wickets but the spinners Jodi Grewcock and Scrivens provided a degree of comfort for the Sunrisers. The problem for Central Sparks women was that there was never a charge toward the end of the innings although Freeborn went on to score a hundred. Sparks managed to pick the wickets of Carr and Villiers when they were still 25 runs short but could not capitalize on it.
