The Birmingham Bears have got off to a great start to the Vitality Blast T20 competition in 2023. They have succeeded in winning 4 out of their last 5 matches. They are sitting in second position in the North Group points table. After getting off to a wonderful start to the competition with 4 wins on the trot Birmingham finally lost their first game against Derbyshire on their 5th attempt. Batting first the Derbyshire team scored 174 runs in a day-night affair played in Derby yesterday. The Birmingham Bears could get to 157 runs for the loss of 9 wickets and fell short by 17 runs in the end.

The Derbyshire inning got off to a decent start but the real impetus to the inning was provided by Wayne Madsen who scored 71 runs from 52 balls with 12 fours to take his team to a position of strength. He was aided on the way by Tom Wood who scored 39 runs from 19 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes. The Aussie Glenn Maxwell was the pick of the bowlers for the Bears picking up 2 wickets for 19 runs from his 4 overs. Henry Brookes and Craig Mills picked up a wicket apiece but they went for a lot of runs. None of the other bowlers could make much of an impression.

The Birmingham batting ran into trouble immediately at the start of their inning. But Glenn Maxwell scored 29 runs from 22 balls with 4 fours to restrict the downslide somewhat. The Warwickshire team lost far too many wickets early on to pose a serious threat to the target. Dan Mousley scored a valiant 36 from 33 balls towards the end of the innings. But this effort was not sufficient to take them across the line. Ed Barnard also scored 27 runs lower down the order. Zaman Khan and Zak Chappell picked up 3 wickets apiece to restrict the Bears' batting charge.

Nottinghamshire

The Nottinghamshire outfit has played five games so far in the competition, winning two and losing three. So, they are in 7th position in the points table for North Group. The Notts team has lost 2 games on the trot now and has a negative net run rate as a result. They played their last game against Worcestershire in the city of Nottingham yesterday. Worcestershire batters put the Nottinghamshire bowling attack to the sword immediately. They piled up a massive score of 226 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. In reply, the Notts were bowled out for 170 runs from 18.2 overs losing the game by a big margin of 56 runs.

The Worcestershire top-order batting was in supreme form with Brett D'Oliviera, Michael Bracewell, and Jack Haynes all contributing to the team cause with big scores. Another Worcestershire batter that scored some runs lower down the order was Adam Hose who hit 51 runs from 27 balls with 4 sixes and 3 fours. This onslaught meant none of the bowlers returned with good figures. Steven Mullaney was the only bowler that escaped the punishment with 2 wickets for 28 runs from his quota of 4 overs.

The Notts top order batters showed a lot of spirit near their top order with the openers Joe Clarke and Alex Hales putting together 56 runs in 4.5 overs for the first wicket. Alex Hales continued his good work even after losing his partner. He scored 71 runs from just 35 balls with 3 sixes and 8 fours. But he received no support from other team members. Shaheen Shah Afridi hit some big blows towards the end of the innings but it was all too late by then. Afridi hit 29 runs from 11 balls with 4 sixes. Brett D'Oliveira picked up 4 wickets for 11 runs from 2 overs while Pat Brown also took 4 victims for Worcestershire.
