The Irish women will take on West Indies women later today in the 3rd one-day international match to be played at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia. This game is the 3rd and final ODI between the two countries and is a part of Ireland women's tour of West Indies, 2023. The second game of the ODI series between these two countries saw rain playing spoilsport. The match had to be abandoned after just 8.4 overs were completed. Due to the bad weather, West Indies captain Hayley Matthews decided to bowl first after winning the toss.

The game after a waiting period finally began and the Irish team quickly found themselves in a big hole as they were reduced to 36 for 5 before the rains closed this chapter. The West Indies new ball bowlers Aaliyah Alleyne and Shamillia Connel shared a couple of wickets each while Hayley Matthews also picked up a wicket. Orla Prendergast was stranded at one end as wickets kept tumbling at the other end. The last one-day international of the series will be played today and it will be a day-night match.

WIW vs IREW Team Previews

West Indies Women

In the first ODI, game played between the two countries, the West Indian skipper Hayley Matthews hit a terrific 109 for the Caribbeans. This was the 4th one-day international hundred by the skipper for the Windies. This innings was also primarily responsible for taking the West Indies to a 1-0 lead in the series. West Indies won the toss and decided to bat first. Matthews was involved in a 156-run stand with Stephanie Taylor that took the hosts to a big score of 297 runs. They defended this total easily and, in the end, won the game by a margin of 58 runs.

Zaida James was sedate in her approach with the bat and she lost her wicket in the 10th over of the match before the more experienced combination of Taylor and Matthews took over the proceedings to take it on the right track. Taylor scored 55 before she got out in the 35th over and Matthews also got out back 4 balls later. From 192 for 1, the hosts quickly slipped to 198 for 4. But Chinelle Henry took charge after this to hit a quick 37-ball 53 not out that powered the score near the 300-run mark.

The West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews was declared the player of the match for her hundred and the 3-fer she picked. Another vital player for West Indies with the bat was Chinelle Henry. Batting in the lower middle order she scored a quick 53 from 37 balls with seven fours. It was thanks to this effort by Henry, the West Indies team managed to reach a big total. Afy Fletcher and Qiana Joseph picked up a couple of wickets apiece to support their captain during the Irish innings.

Ireland Women

The Irish women tried hard to keep up with the pace of this big target. They were successful in reaching 172 for 2 from 36 overs. But the main batter for them, Gaby Lewis lost her wicket for 83 runs at this stage. The pressure of this mounting run-rate finally got the better of the remaining batters and in the end, the Irish women fell well short of the target. Matthews followed her hundred with excellent figures of 3 for 53 during her bowling effort. Afy Fletcher also picked up 2 for 49 during her spell.

The Irish batters were circumspect in their approach scoring just 35 runs from their powerplay overs. Their opening batter Gaby Lewis was able to hold the Ireland innings together by adding 67 runs with Orla Prendergast for the 2nd wicket. This was followed by a 71-run partnership with the Irish skipper Laura Delany who scored 40 runs. But this was the day for the West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews. Next, she struck with the ball, by removing Delany. None of the other batswomen were able to put up a fight as the Irish women's batting effort ended at 239 runs for 9 wickets from their 50 overs.

The best bowler for the Irish women in this game was Cara Murray who picked up 3 wickets for 60 runs from her 10 overs. Other bowlers Ava Canning, Arlene Kelly, and Sophie MacMohan also picked up a wicket apiece in a supporting role for Murray. Some other batters apart from Gaby Lewis that chipped in with useful scores were Orla Prendergast and the captain Laura Delany. Prendergast scored a useful 37 from 41 balls with 4 fours and 1 six. Gaby Lewis hit 83 from 102 balls with 6 fours.
