Western Australia

The Western Australia team has made an ominous start to their campaign for the Sheffield Shield 2023-24 season with a thumping win over Victoria in their first game of the season. Batting first Western Australia scored 481 runs with big contributions from batters such as Bancroft, Wyllie, Goodwin, and Turner. These batters scored 122, 94, 63, and 57 runs respectively to take the Western Australia score to a big one. Later on, their bowlers did an exceptional job by bundling out the Victorians twice for 256 and 172 runs respectively.

The sluggish pitch at WACA saw a second-string attack from Western Australia overwhelming the Victorians in their bid for a hat-trick of these Sheffield Shield titles. This game was a rematch of the finals of the last two versions of Sheffield Shield. Western Australia once again displayed that they have the number of Victorian teams and showcased the depth of talent available to them. They even did not have the services of their frontline fast bowlers available to them. Bowlers such as Jhye Richardson, Joel Paris, Matt Kelly, and Lance Morris were missing from their bowling attack.

But the new-look Western Australia fast bowling attack provided a disciplined performance on the 4th and final day of the contest to bowl out the Victorians shortly after the tea break. The fast bowler Cameron Gannon was relentless in his pursuit while the left-arm debutant quick Liam Haskett was fast and aggressive in his bowling effort. All this means the selectors have a headache on their hands for selection for their next game coming up. The off-spinner Corey Rocchiccioli received a sharp turn from the track and bowled well on a wearing track.

The wicket on offer during this game was docile for most of the game but started to play tricks in the last session. Rocchiccioli finished the game with excellent figures of 3 for 14 from 26.2 overs. He amazingly bowled 20 maidens during this spell. This performance was achieved on the Perth wicket which is notorious for not offering any help to the spinners. The Western Australia all-rounder Aaron Hardie was responsible for picking up the wicket of former Victorian skipper Peter Handscomb. He has made a debut for the international team recently in the one-day format.

Tasmania

Both these teams Western Australia and Tasmania are heading into this game on the back of victories in their first game of the competition. Tasmania also recorded a victory in their first game against South Australia by a margin of 7 wickets. The Tasmanian Charlie Wakim was adjudged player of the match for his hundred during the Tasmanian innings. The all-round capabilities shown by the Tasmanian Beau Webster augur well for them when they take on Western Australia later on 15th October.

Webster picked up career-best figures of 4 for 32 in this game as the home side folded up for 157 runs in their second innings. The Tasmanians were required to get just 84 runs for a victory and they got it just after team break on the third day of the contest. Webster was instrumental in mopping up the opponents’ tailenders picking up a career-best haul of 4 wickets from his 72 first-class games. Although the Tasmanian opening batter Caleb Jewel made 87 runs in the first innings, he was trapped lbw on the bowling of the seamer Wes Agar.

The Tasmanian skipper Jordon Silk also contributed a bit to the small chase scoring 24 not out in the 4th innings. All-in-all it was a comprehensive victory for Tasmania. Charlie Wakim set the tone for Tasmania earlier with a good century scoring 110 runs from 144 balls with as many as 20 fours. The wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade hit 43 runs to contribute to the team's tally as well. Gabe Bell was the top bowler for Tasmania in their first effort with the ball picking up 3 wickets for 68 runs. Lawrence Neil Smith, Jarrod Freeman, and Mitchell Owen picked up 2 wickets apiece.

All these bowlers together with Beau Webster were in business once again in the second innings. They will be looking to contribute heavily in this game against Western Australia again. Gabe Bell once again picked up 3 wickets in the second innings and Lawrence Neil-Smith also collected 3 wickets. After an early loss of Caleb Jewell Tasmania did not receive any further flutters during their chase. It was just too small a target for the Tasmanian batters and they reached the target safely in the end.
