SYTW vs MLSW Team Previews

Sydney Thunder Women

At this point, Sydney is looking great even in second place, and Chamari Athapaththu is certainly largely responsible for this success. Since the all-rounder player from Sri Lanka only scored 133 runs during her previous season with the Renegades, her current season's total of 304 runs is even more remarkable. She was recently voted as the WBBL's current best player by cricket.com.au.

Wilson has scored 233 runs and has really come into her own at the perfect moment. Wilson's batting has improved significantly, as seen by her 83* in the most recent game.  Athapaththu and Wilson are potentially the greatest opening duo in the WBBL. While Litchfield (190 runs) and Knight (123 runs) are significant contributors to the team's total, Kapp (29) and Learoyd (48) in the middle order could still be doing more to ensure success in the later overs.

Darlington has performed incredibly well as a bowler thus far to reach 9/198 overall. She is often dependable for at least two wickets per game. She is unquestionably the Thunder's top bowler, while Kapp (5/152) is behind her as the second-best. Johnson is improving with 4/90, but Bates has bowled 22 overs and has a very low effort of 1/170, so we're unsure why the team trusts her to bowl so much.

Melbourne Stars Women

The Stars have looked a bit iffy lately after three straight losses, although the most-recent loss to the Sixers was interrupted by rain and had to be decided with the DLS method. The Stars only needed 56 runs in 7 overs after the revised target, but they could only get 51 runs.

Not too much has changed since the last game, as barely any runs were scored. Lanning leads the team in scoring with 171, although her performances vary greatly and she is unpredictable; in her previous three games, she has scored 0, 17, and 75. Although we think she may be the top batter in every game, we hoped she would be more reliable. Sutherland's 155 has been useful, although she has not yet reached the half-century mark despite getting extremely close twice.

Dunkley (84) and Capsey (164) are batting well enough, but the squad needs much more from opener Reid (26 runs in 3 games) and Bouchier (just 29 runs in her last four games).

While Day (14/200) and Sutherland (12/208) have shown flashes of good bowling in this team's performances, there isn't nearly enough support for this duo. Garth's 4/191 is far short of her potential, while Moloney continues to bowl so many overs in each game despite being out of rhythm with a 1/219 (9.52 ER).

SYTW vs MLSW Toss Prediction

Bowling first is a great option on this pitch, as batting can be difficult at times. On the other hand, should the captain win the toss, she would most likely choose to field. In the WBBL, historically, there have been about equal numbers of wins from bowling first (20) and batting first (27).

Pitch and Conditions

The North Sydney Oval is typically a terrific surface for spinners, with lots of grip and great turn. Low-scoring games are fairly usual, so batters may need to be cautious while selecting their strokes and avoid getting too excited to take advantage of spinners. Pace bowlers may be useful early on with the new ball, but spin is undoubtedly more effective. Some light rain is predicted in the morning, but the day should be sunny around 23°C.

SYTW vs MLSW Betting Tips

The Rajabets odds suggest a good money reward when betting on the Stars, but honestly, we barely trust them at this point. If they couldn’t even beat the hapless Sixers with a very low score to reach, then there’s no way they’ll defeat the Thunder.

Although Day and Sutherland are decent bowlers, we don’t think they are good enough to topple outstanding Thunder batters like Athapaththu, Wilson, Litchfield, and Knight. What’s more, Darlington and Kapp have really improved and can easily handle Stars batters in a slump like Lanning, Bouchier, and Dunkley.

    Best Thunder Batter: Chamari Athapaththu

    12/5

    Visit

Despite being one of the best scorers in the league, Athapaththu's odds are still quite good, and even a small bet can get a nice reward. She should be able to annihilate the Stars bowlers, especially if Moloney is up. She's one of only 3 batters to reach over 300 runs, and her SR is 143.39 right now, so she's going to be great in the game yet again.

    Best Stars Batter: Alice Capsey

With 164 runs so far, Capsey isn't exactly the top scorer for the Stars, but she's turning into one of the most reliable. Lanning and Sutherland aren't quite what they were last season, but Capsey has had her big moments this year and has already made 52 in a recent match. The odds are more interesting and she has the ability to score quickly.

Wilson has been scoring at a steady pace and has a total of 233 runs. She's a consistent batter with scores regularly in double figures, as her last three matches have had scores of 30, 45, and 83*. It's a safe bet with her as an opening batter.
