SNP vs GAW Match Prediction & Betting Tips - Aug 24, 2023

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and Guyana Amazon Warriors will contest the eighth match of the 2023 Caribbean Premier League. The Patriots currently occupy third position in the six-team CPL standings, while the Amazon Warriors are second from the bottom.

It is still the early stages of the tournament, which has been limited by a string of washouts in Gros Islet. With dry conditions forecast in Basseterre, there is opportunity for St Kitts and Nevis and Guyana to climb the table. Let's see what the betting odds have in store for this match.

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots vs Guyana Amazon Warriors head-to-head record

The Patriots have won four of their last five meetings with the Warriors. The fifth was a washout. That's a dominant recent record for Guyana to overcome.

All four of St Kitts and Nevis' last four wins over the Amazon Warriors have come batting second, including 2021's semi-final at the same venue for this match.

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots

St Kitts and Nevis are third on the table, but only have two points to show for that position. They have weathered two washouts this season and, earlier this week, lost heavily to Jamaica Tallawahs. The turnaround between that defeat to Jamaica and this fixture with the Warriors is under 24 hours - and requires a quick response from the Patriots.

Captain Evin Lewis fell cheaply, while Indian batsman Ambati Rayudu collected a duck against the Tallawahs. The decision to push all-rounder Corbin Bosch up the order didn't yield reward. Wicketkeeper-batsman Joshua Da Silva top-scored with 36, but he'll need far more support this time.

There is an evident imbalance in the Patriots' bowling attack. With one specialist slow bowler partnering five seamers, perhaps they need to consider bringing an additional spinner into the XI to partner South African George Linde. Conditions should merit this. Jamaica bowled a full eight overs of spin en route to victory over St Kitts and Nevis at this venue earlier this week.

Guyana Amazon Warriors

We are over a week into the tournament and Guyana still have not completed a fixture. They'll trust that this is their cue to get going against a Patriots XI smarting from heavy recent defeat to the Tallawahs. Guyana have been CPL runners-up five times, but have never won the title. They will be hard pressed against a Patriots outfit eager to build on their title-winning success in 2021.

Proteas leg-spinner Imran Tahir is the Amazon Warriors' captain this year. It's an intriguing choice, given the presence of local options Romario Shepherd, Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope. Tahir has plenty of experience, but a lot do in leading by example with the ball and in the field.

Hetmyer and Hope were the Amazon Warriors' leading run-scorers last season, with 281 and 252, respectively. Those numbers were not necessarily coupled with big averages or strike rates, but there is an onus on the duo to do well for the team again.

Tahir and Shepherd shared a resounding 27 wickets in the 2022 CPL. Complementing spin with seam worked well for the Warriors then - and could be the case again this season. We'll need to see if Tahir can effectively manage the additional responsibility of the captaincy and continue to shine in his primary role with the ball.

SNP vs GAW Toss Prediction

Captains who won the toss during the opening four matches of the Basseterre leg of the 2022 CPL chose to bowl first. Three of those decisions resulted in wins.

In the first Basseterre match of the 2023 tournanent, the Tallawahs won the toss, bowled first - and won the match. The Patriots and Warriors will likely stick with this approach at the flip of the coin.

Pitch and Conditions

Very little to no rain is forecast in Basseterre for the rest of the week. We should get a full fixture at Warner Park. Humidity levels will be characteristically high. The bowlers are going to have to keep their hands dry to maintain solid grip on the ball.

The Patriots showed against the Tallawahs that a total under 160 is not necessarily enough to win at Warner Park. Jamaica won with eight wickets and 21 deliveries to spare. This isn't a high-scoring venue, per se, but 170-odd in the first innings could prove competitive.

SNP vs GAW Betting Tips

The Patriots, despite their recent struggles with washouts and recent defeat to reigning champions Jamaica, look the strongest option to win this match.

If opener Andre Fletcher, Lewis and Rayudu fire and the rest of the top- through middle-order chip in enough runs, they should top a Guyana batting department short on time out in the middle.

Guyana have a new captain who is still finding his feet as a team leader - and remain under pressure to finally win a title after losing five finals. It's only the round-robin stage, but that pressure will begin to gradually toll.

Bet on the underdog Patriots to win this match at 2.00. The Amazon Warriors are priced as favourites at 1.83. You could also bet on St Kitts and Nevis to win the toss and the match at 3.00.

Drakes is a burgeoning all-rounder and a good pick for the player of the match award. He pushed the Patriots to a competitive total with an enterprising 29 not out against Jamaica recently. He then bowled with good economy and snared the key wicket of the in-form Brandon King.

Hetmyer is renowned for his range hitting. We've seen it in the Indian Premier League and, more recently, Major League Cricket in the United States of America. He could take advantage of the shorter boundaries on offer at Warner Park and is a good pick to hit at least one six in this match.

Imran Tahir to be top Guyana Amazon Warriors bowler

Whether the Guyana captaincy empowers or limits Tahir's success as a leg-spinner in this tournament remains in the balance. Conditions at Warner Park should suit spin, as Jamaica showed recently. Tahir has taken a whopping 469 wickets in T20 cricket. Taking three or more here could make him Guyana's top bowler in the match.
