SA has some well-known players in the national Australian cricket side like Travis Head and Alex Carey. Still, Victoria did battle hard against the odds in the last match against SA, which ended in a draw. This was thanks largely to captain Peter Handscomb’s massive 148 runs, not out.

It’s impossible to ignore the pure force of South Australia’s squad right now.
The team was superb in chasing 326 runs on the last day against NSW in their most recent match. This was a statement win and featured a great performance by Henry Hunt, who is the joint Sheffield Shield Player of the Year, alongside Victoria’s Travis Dean.
Even though SA’s squad is bolstered by Head and Carey, the team can’t always rely on them, as these two are often playing in Australia’s national games for Tests, ODIs, and T20s.
Hunt is an absolute rising star in Aussie batting, and has picked up 773 runs in 10 matches with a batting average of 42.94. He’s sure to be called up for his country in the Test format soon enough.
We also like David Grant’s bowling with 24 wickets in 9 matches, not to mention the strong showing of batter Daniel Drew, who earned a century in the last meeting against Victoria.

Victoria
Victoria is a tough side on any day, but the team’s depth suffered a slight loss with bowlers such as James Pattinson not agreeing to a new contract and Henry Thornton leaving for rivals South Australia.
The loss of keeper Seb Gotch due to a finger injury also does major harm, although backup Sam Harper is capable enough.
Victoria has won the Sheffield Shield four times in the last decade, as there’s always a great lineup that is well-coached and hungry for wins. Nevertheless, we can’t help but feel that this current squad, apart from names like Handscomb and Dean, is not nearly as strong as previous years.
The fact that Victoria did draw the last game against SA makes things a fairly even playing field, and the return of batter Will Pucovski is a boost, but South Australia looks very much the better side right now.
