Boland

Boland had a disastrous start to the season, losing its first 3 matches. But they have since turned the tide, and are now riding on two consecutive wins. They still have two matches in hand and have a mathematical chance of making it to the finals.

Boland’s previous match against the Warriors was a high-scoring affair. Opting to bowl first, the Rocks were stung by a superb opening partnership of 115 from the Warriors. The bowlers were left clueless in front of a stunning onslaught by Jordan Hermann who went on to score 150.

Chasing a stiff target of 322, the Rocks lost its 3 top-order batsmen within the first 15 overs. Janneman Malan and Christiaan Jonker, who was playing his first match of the season, took over the proceedings and steadied the Rocks’ innings and a late onslaught by Shaun von Berg and Hardus Viljoen saw the Rocks walk away with 4 points.

Malan has been the most consistent batsman for his team and has got good support from von Berg Ferisco Adams. However, it is the bowling that has let them down this season. Hardus Viljoen is third on the list of leading wicket-takers for the season but the other bowlers have failed to impress so far. 

North West Dragons

North West team began its campaign with 2 consecutive victories but seems to have struggled to keep up the consistency moving forward. They lost crucial matches against the Western Provinces and the Lions and as a result, they aren’t sure of their place in the finals even at the last match. They will have to win this game and then wait for the result of Western Provinces vs Boland to know their fate.

Lesego Senokwane put in an excellent effort with the bat and is the highest run-getter for the team with 264 runs.

However, the same cannot be said about the other top-order batsmen as Shaylen Pillay and Heino Kuhn haven’t been consistent enough while Grant Mokoena has been an outright failure. Christopher Britz has missed a couple of matches but has lent some stability to an otherwise average batting.

Senuran Muthusamy has been the surprise package of this season and has impressed everyone with his all-round exploits. Muthusamy has scored 241 runs and also picked up 9 wickets from 6 games. Kerwin Mokoena is the leading wicket-taker with 10 wickets and has received good support from Muthusamy as well as Eldred Hawken.

If the North West wants to keep its chances of making it to the playoffs alive, its top-order batsmen will need to step up.
